Mother Charged for Entering School Bus to Protect Child! Tara Keener Story!

Theresa L.
A number of laws were created over the years, some of which are completely understandable while others are questionable. One of these laws states we have the right to protect ourselves or another human being, but to what length. Are we allowed to shoot someone if it is life threatening? Are we allowed to trespass if we see another person in danger.

The right of self-dense, alter ego defense, defense of a third person, and defense of others give the right to civilians to engage in violence to defend their life or the life of another human being as long as it is within the law.

That is not the case of Tara Keener. On December 15, Tara boarded a school bus after noticing her 5 year old son was slumped over in his seat. Tara reported that a group of students were surrounding her son, shouting out pleas for help because the young boy would not wake up.

Keener, who is a registered nurse, rushed onto the Perry County school bus with the intent of aiding of her son. However, as she boarded the bus, the bus driver stopped her and informed her it was illegal for her to enter the bus.

Keener, who disregarded the warning, is now facing misdemeanor charges that could land her in jail for 1 year with a $2500 in fines.

Unfortunately, there are two sides of every story and the bus company is currently denying that any child had been calling out for help. According to the bus company, Keener did not give the driver time to wake up her son who had fallen asleep, something the young boy did numerous times.

Not only that, the bus company feels that by opening the door to one parent coming onto the bus they are opening the door to other parents, including sex offenders. However, both sides do agree that Keener did not come into contact with any child but her own.

To sum it all up, we have a mother who feared her son was in danger and in trying to get to him she is being charged and will now defend herself in front of a trial of juries.

So, now I have to ask the question - are they mad???

Yes, there have been a lot of negativity in the world with the Casey Anthony trial, but, seriously, what parent would not do anything for their children. If you saw or even believed for one second your child was in danger or hurt would you really, and truthfully, stand to the side?

The answer is very simple, and that is no. No parent would stand to the side if they believe their child was hurt or in danger. They would be the first ones there, and if breaking the law meant the only way to get to them than that is what every parent would do.

It is an instinct we have as parents to protect our young and keep them from harm. The law gives us the right to protect them, but the law also gives the right to the school. As a parent, when you enroll your child into school, you fill out a form giving them permission to treat your child in case of an emergency.

However, the school still has to inform you and in this case the driver knew who Keener was, knew who her son was, and should have permitted her access to treat her son. She did what every parent would of done in that situation and by punishing her, the law is stating that parents do not have the right to aid their children at anytime or anyplace.

there is a lot to be said about a mother's instinct. never fight it. when it comes to your child's health and safety, always be safe than sorry. it's too bad the mother is being punished for this motherly act. i suppose the story would've been different if she just wanted to ride on the bus just because.

I don't think there should be anything wrong with it, especially since the kid was only five years old. If it was one of mine, and I thought they were ill, I would of done the same thing - and have. I guess it just all goes on the school.

This is crazy! What's wrong with a parent entering a bus to retrieve their sleeping child?

I agree with you there, Michele.

Yes they are Tresa. It is really sad when we can no longer protect or aid our own children without getting into trouble.
