Mother Knows Best, Allegedly Serves Anti-Freeze Cocktail

An elderly Luzerne County woman,79 year old Helen Galli, is accused of poisoning her son's girlfriend with anti-freeze. It wasn't the first time the elderly woman was arrested .

Helen Galli pleaded guilty twenty years ago for being the mastermind of an arson plot aimed at getting rid of her then daughter-in-law. Mrs. Galli did no prison time stemming from that crime, but spent four years under house arrest.

In that case, police believed that Helen had persuaded her grandchildren to set fire to the house. In this latest case, Helen Galli appeared before news reporters as she exited the magistrate's office.

In response to a reporter's question, she called the charges a "joke." Authorities theorize that the accused woman saw herself as the rival for her son's attentions.

Many Pennsylvania land is within the huge Marcellus Shale natural gas deposit lands. Energy drilling companies have been quietly and successfully seeking leases on land in Northeastern Pennsylvania and along its borders with New York state.

When the son got an unexpected financial windfall from a natural gas lease on land he owned, the tension between the two women sharpened. Trooper Tom Kelly, of the Pennsylvania State Police, told WBRE news that the mother wanted a share of the anticipated dividends from the land lease.

The victim of the poison attack, Dawn Semyan, said that her boyfriend loved his mother but also loved her. Semyan drank the anti-freeze laced drink in March and was hospitalized.

Analysis of her blood content showed the presence of anti-freeze.

There are different composites of anti-freeze but a common type contains ethylene glycol . The body metabolizes ethylene glycol and turns it into oxalic acid. In sufficient amounts, oxalic acid destroys the kidneys and attacks other organs of the body.

Semyan's boyfriend, Victor Galli, has declined to comment on his mother's arrest, after he posted her $25 thousand dollar bail.

Now, Dawn Semyan is not so sure about love at all.

Maybe the old broad wasn't trying to kill the gal pal but instead overheard the chick say she was "freezing" and Momma thought she was helping with giving her "anti-freeze." Isn't this obvious?

You cannot make this stuff up - this could be a horror movie. Cheers for the reporting, I hadn't heard this news! Scary, isn't it?!

Wow, what a twisted tale of maternal love gone awry - although the money part makes you wonder if she's not just greedy! Well written, Anthony :-)
