Authorities are investigating an incident in which a mother was killed in a fatality involving her 13 year old son. The woman who has been identified by the Spartanburg County Corroners Office as 40 year old Janie Mae Hampton was pinned between the vehicle her son was driving and another parked vehicle around 8:30 pm at Crown Pointe apartments in Spartanburg, SC.

According to a preliminary investigation report, officers believe that Hampton was trying to teach her 13 year old son how to park a car when he accidentally backed into her, causing her to be pinned bewteen the vehicle she was in and another parked car. It is believed that Hampton exited the car with it still in motion.

The vehicle then continued in reverse and eventually backed into one of the apartment buildings. The Spartanburg County Public Safety Department doesn't believe that any charges will be filed in the incident. On top of that, Hampton's sister was working as a nurse at Spartanburg Regional Hospital when her sister was brought in by emergency crews. Hampton's sister was the first to be notified of her sister's death and was told by authorities that she needed to call her family and notify them of Hampton's death. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

This tragedy, that could have been prevented, leaves a 13 year old boy without his mother and also leaves him knowing that his mothers death was caused by a fatality that didn't have to happen. This is a prime example of why children should not be behind the wheel of a vehicle, especially when it is in motion. 13 year old children are not issued permits for the simple fact that a 13 year old is usually not responsible enough to be driving a vehicle.

Most parents don't really think of the things that could go wrong when they are trying to teach their children to drive. Anything could happen, such as accidents like this one. This is a horrible accident and an awful death that a family is now having to deal with when the whole ordeal could have been prevented. Please take extra caution when you are teaching your children to drive a vehicle or you could be leaving your life or someone else's in the hands of your child. It is still not known why Hampton exited the vehicle with it still in motion.
