Mother, Why?

A Powers
Tell me, Mother, why the Moon
is purple in the springtime rain.
Tell me how the tortoise sang
and how the bullfrog swallows pain.
Tell me what the Sun can see,
and what the River hides,
and how to hold the peach twig straight,
and how to read the tides.
Tell me how to heal the sick
and how to love the mean,
how to let my heart believe
in things I've never seen.
Tell me, Mother, one more time.
Sit with me and hold my hand.
Tell me how to hear the stones.
Tell me; I will understand.
