Motherhood : A Baby's First Pet

Veronika Fevers
My son is fast approaching his second birthday. With that having been said, his development seems to be in overdrive these past few months. He is starting to classify things in groups as his vocabulary is beginning to grow.

For instance, although he recognizes that I am his mother, he tends to call all women, "Momma", all males "Dada", any eating utensil a "bowl." The one that makes me laugh though is his reference to animals. To Corvin, all animals are "Bobos." My dog, Bourbon is often called by her nickname "Bobo," and thus he refers to all animals by this term.

I read on average two books a day to Corvin, one prior to his midday nap, and of course one prior to bedtime. While I read to him, I do as any parent does-I point at the pictures and explain what they are. He has called alligators, elephants, even armadillos by the name "Bobo."

Corvin interacts very well with Bourbon, and they are like two peas in a pod.

We have allowed him to let her outside (supervised of course), and at meal times when he is done eating, he throws the rest of his food on the floor and yells "BOBO!" We have tried to break him of this habit as we don't want her eating table food, but occasionally she is faster to get it than we are to sweep it up.

Corvin loves his first pet, and as he grows we will teach him how to feed her to help instill a sense of responsibility.

I love the fact that he has taken an interest in her, and that she responds well to him although she is typically put off by young children. The experience has proven beneficial to them both.
