Motherhood's A Job of Teaching Gratitude

What My Son Heard: Survival of the Hungriest

Bonnie Stanford
Motherhood is full of important jobs, one of the most important and difficult in this society is teaching gratitude. I frequently remind my two kids aged 2 and 5, how blessed we all are to have everything we have, especially the things we take most for granted. I definitely do not want this message to go over their heads, so I point this out often.

To emphasize this message at dinner one night I told my kids that some people don't even have food. My husband chimed in, "You know, there are people in this world who are so hungry they would kill you for that plate of food right there." My child's eyes widened as he ate his food in silence.

A few nights passed before a particular dinner when I was extra careful to serve extra-healthy food: grilled chicken, green beans, corn, and carrots, fulfilling my "healthy cook" motherhood role. I expected a whine from my eldest son who squirms at the sight of any color on his plate.

Instead he looked at his own plate before staring at his dad's and saying, "You know Dad, if I didn't have THIS food, I would kill you for that food."

yes, LOL! Does it make it so much more fun when those we educate, or love, show their lessons with witty humor? I do agree that GRATITUDE is the winning attitude in secular and spiritual matters. I am working on making my gratitude real...comparing with those who are worse off, helps us to give praise to Creator-God. Happy Maundy Thursday Blessings

LOL -- I'm glad you are instilling good morals in your children. Many parents seem to not even give a crap these days and THAT is horrible! Great job!

LOL. This was a cute and entertaining story. What did your husband say to that?

I was expecting the comment of the starving can have mine on his seeing his food, good entertaining writing.

Oh, too funny, Bonnie. I was worrying, as I read this, that he'd become totally paranoid & be afraid people were luking outside the house waiting to kill him for his plate of food! The classic when I was a kid was the old, "There are starving people in China!" And kids staring down a slime pile of canned spinach would be thinking, "Give them MY dinner.. please!" Thanks for sharing this parenting scene! Sounds like you work hard at being a well-rounded mother & all-around good person. : )
