1) If you live in a fairly temperate area (like the West Coast), take in the Cherry Blossom Festival which often coincides closely with Mother's Day.
2) Have a picnic at the park. Pack a lunch with pinwheel sandwiches, fruit juices, and cubed fruits. Or pack your mom's favourite "bad food choice" like fried chicken. Enjoy the flowers while you're there.
3) Treat your mom to her favourite meal. Make it for her if you can (order it in if you can't).
4) Give her a home spa treatment. Get out the foot bath, soak her feet and then massage them with foot cream. Put pretty polish on her toenails. Then give her a manicure.
5) Send mom out for a few hours while you (and the rest of the family) clean the house from top to bottom. Take pictures of your cleaning frenzy and preserve the occasion in a photo album.
6) Get the whole family involved in doing a skit of "Your life in 5 (or 10) years" for your mom. Make wacky predictions and make sure you let mom know how much you appreciate her.
7) Using family members as cast, re-enact parts of your mom's life in a humorous, but loving way.
8) Take your mom's favourite songs and re-record them with your family members singing along.
9) Buy or make a daybook with space on each date for your mother to answer one question a day about her life. (ie. My best friend in second grade was...)
10) Help your mom start her garden early. Choose some seeds that she can start indoors, get some peat pods, a small seedling starter kit, and a mini watering can. Spend the afternoon planting the seeds.
11) Spend time in the garden with your mom; help her clear the weeds, add nutrients and start her plants. Wrap them (if necessary) to protect them from the cold.
12) If mom is adventurous, take her for a Mother's Day hike. Bring her a blank book so she can collect wildflowers, or a guidebook to help identify the plants/animals on the route.
13) Plant poems about mothers around the house on post-it notes. Leave them where mom will find them when she least expects them.
14) Borrow movies about mothers and hold a Mother Movie Marathon. Pop popcorn, make pizza, hang out and relax together.
15) Take up a pastime with your mom. (Knit, scrapbook, paint, write, downhill ski, learn a new language - whatever she loves).
Have a Happy Mother's Day!
