Mother's Day Activities for Mom and Kids

Rediscover Your Inner Child This Mother's Day

Heather K. Adams
This year for Mother's Day, I have decided to delve into the world of regression and simply spend the day being a kid with my kids.

Eat ice cream for breakfast.
If your kids are like mine, you really don't want them in the kitchen making you breakfast in bed for Mother's Day. The disaster you would face upon rising would not be worth the extra 10 minutes under the covers. For one day only, try being a child again and serving ice cream for breakfast. Did you know that there are less calories in a 1/2 cup of Dreyer's Cookies 'n Cream ice cream (160) than there are in a raspberry Pop-Tart (210)? A 3/4 cup bowl of Cocoa Puffs with a 1/2 cup 2% milk is 180 calories. So indulge your inner child and your sweet tooth and enjoy an ice cream breakfast with your kids this Mother's Day. They will think you've gone mad!

Watch cartoons.
Cartoons are on all the time at my house, but I never sit down and actually watch them with the kids. Get some DVDs of the classics: Smurfs, Fraggle Rock, Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny, etc. Chances are your children have never even heard of the little blue men just three apples tall, so sharing a bit of your childhood with them will be an eye-opener! Stay in your pajamas, grab some blankets and pillows, and curl up with your kids on the floor for some quality boob-tube time.

Let your kids make lunch.
Lunch is much easier to make than breakfast, so there won't be as much of a mess. On the menu this Mother's Day? Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and chocolate milk, of course. Get out the ingredients and utensils the kids will need, then step back and watch them work. If you're feeling really brave, leave the room to check your email while they are preparing the feast. Squeezable jelly is a must for this endeavor.

Put on your play clothes and go outside.
Once you've wiped the grape jelly off the ceiling in the kitchen, don your old clothes and head outside to play with the kids. How long has it been since you played hopscotch? Do you even remember how? Grab some sidewalk chalk and get to it!

Take a nap.
Spending some time giggling in the great outdoors, not to mention hopping around like a little kid, can wear a person out. Take a break this Mother's Day and spend nap time actually napping. Don't worry about using this time to tidy the house or do some laundry. Chill out and sleep like a baby with your babies.

Have a pillow fight.
Nothing wakes a child faster than a whap to the face with a pillow. Make sure everyone is armed and then take turns beating each other up. Bouncing on the bed during the battle is completely optional. Take heed that no one really gets hurt. It's not a good thing to spend Mother's Day in the emergency room putting stitches in little Suzy's head.

Order in a pizza for dinner.
After spending the day being a kid, who wants to cook? Get a large cheese pizza and some caffeine-free soda and eat off paper plates. Have you ever had a carpet picnic? It's a great treat your kids will enjoy this Mother's Day. Put down a large blanket in the middle of the living room, plop the pizza box in the middle of it, and cop a squat. Sing songs like 'The Ants Go Marching' to make it a little more realistic.

Go to bed early.
Child-like behavior is exhausting. Nothing could be better than to end this Mother's Day right after the kids are tucked in. I guarantee they will be worn out and dreaming of the blast they had with Mom all day.
