This year for Mother's Day skip the fancy restaurants and take Mom out to a comfortable and delicious brunch. May 8th is Mother's Day and restaurants all over town will be touting a brunch special. There are specials at The Plaza, Tavern on the Green and Essex House. Why bother with those though when you can head out to a spot that has a great brunch every Sunday? Here are a few great hidden gems in Hell's Kitchen for an amazing Mother's Day brunch.
Irish Rogue (1): A sports bar where you can watch soccer streaming live from England and have a pint way too early in the morning, Irish Rogue has an amazing brunch I've enjoyed for years. For $11.95 you get your choice of entree and two drinks. This is an Irish pub so the drinks are spectacular. My wife's favorite is to order the eggs Benedict which comes with thick and tasty hollandaise. Her drink of choice is t the champagne cocktail. My wife likes to think she is fancy, and for $11.95 Mom can feel fancy too.
Irish Rogue is open for brunch on Sunday from 10:00am to 4:30pm and is located at 356 West 44th Street, NYC 10036. You do not need a reservation but you can call ahead as they are usually packed by 11am. 212-445-0131.
Mercury Bar (2): Located in Hell's Kitchen Mercury Bar is a great bar for happy hour and a surprisingly classy spot for brunch. This Mother's Day if the weather is nice, the front of Mercury Bar will likely be open and the spring breeze will waft through the restaurant. On Sunday May 8th from 10:30am to 4:00pm you can treat Mom to great dishes such as steak and eggs, an omelet Florentine, granola and fruit or Mercury Bar French toast all for under $13. Add a delicious appletini or mojito and Mom will feel loved and refreshed.
Mercury Bar is located at 659 Ninth Avenue, NYC 10036. You do not need a reservation but on Mother's Day it may be safe to call ahead at 212-262-7755.
Rachel's (3): This tiny little Hell's Kitchen restaurant is so fantastic! I'm amazed it's not more of a destination than it is. Locals love it though and so will your mom on Mother's Day. On Sunday from 11:00am to 3:00pm take Mom over to Rachel's for a great brunch. For only $14.95 you get the full spread which includes a cocktail or wine. Rachel's breakfast includes great little scones with a strawberry butter that is so tasty. Mom can opt for a breakfast entree or steer more towards lunch and enjoy a variety of different things. Some choices include a pita with seared tuna, crabcake sliders or penne with vodka. The last time I was here was with my Mother and brother before he went off to Iraq and it was a great meal. Now you can do the same for your mom on Mother's Day.
Rachel's is located at 608 Ninth Avenue, NYC 10036. You should make a reservation by calling 212-957-9050.
This Mother's Day don't break the bank on expensive eggs that may not be very good. Head on down to Hell's Kitchen for some awesome concoctions, spirits, celebrate Mom and tell her that you love her.
