Mother's Day Brunch Style Guide

Invited to a Mother's Day brunch? Wondering what you should wear? Well, you are not alone. Moms who have been knee-deep in diapers, as well as those who haven't played the tooth fairy or curfew enforcer for years, are in the same boat. Restaurants who host Mother's Day brunches run the gamut from casual to elegant. You could be having brunch in a ball room or pancake house depending upon the budget and desires of your offspring or friends. Being confused about what to wear seems to go with the mom territory. Here are some tips along with specific examples of what constitutes an appropriate Mother's Day brunch ensemble.

Do your own research. After finding out where you are headed for brunch, call the restaurant and ask. The manager or receptionist should be able to tell you whether the atmosphere is casual, formal or somewhere in between.

Start with the basics. The foundation of your outfit should be comfortable and familiar. This doesn't mean your favorite sweatpants. But a nice pair of dark-wash jeans can be dressed either up or down. Look for flared skinny jeans like The Flirt from Old Navy, or Bisou Bisou trouser-style jeans. You can always swap the jeans for a pair of dress pants or a pencil skirt.

Add a feminine blouse. Blouses this season offer plenty of variety. Look for a pattern that celebrates your personal style. Florals, geometric, or solids work well. Or, like my personal favorite, tiered ruffles like this flouncy white blouse from Banana Republic.

Pull it together. Restaurants are often chilly; like you always tell your kids, bring a jacket. This time though a jacket like this silky merrina jacket from Chico's offers more than just protection against the shivers. This stylish option makes you sparkle and shine even in a casual atmosphere.

Show-stopper shoes. This is your day to shine, mom. Add accessories that make your outfit pop and give you a boost of confidence. Slip on a pair of fun wedges like these green sandals from Eric Michael, or for a more formal event, try a pretty peep-toe pump in a surprising color like these yellow dazzlers from Anne Klein.

Know thyself. The best way to pull a Mother's Day brunch outfit together is to be true to yourself. While a colorful scarf draped over your shoulders or wrapped gently around your neck will work for some moms, I lean towards layered necklaces. Others may like the simplicity of a simple favorite necklace.

Now enjoy yourself, mom. You deserve it. Happy Mother's Day!
