Mother's Day Craft & Activity: The Royal Family

Kara Kelso
This craft and activity is very simple, and uses materials you probably have in your house already. It's Mother's day after all, and you don't want to be running around for supplies! It can be done by just the kids, or with parents. The number of family members you do this activity with is really up to you, and how many want to participate.

The Main Craft

First the craft. Everyone (or whoever is playing) will need crowns. This part is the easiest, but allows you and the kids to use your creativity. Just a few of the items you might need include:

- Construction Paper
- Crayons
- Glue
- Scissors
- Tape or stapler
- Glitter
- Other decorations (optional)

To start, you'll need to measure your crowns so they'll fit everyone properly. For mom, you will probably need to use more than one sheet of construction paper.

Once you know your sizes, you can now design your crown. Use your imagination for different designs, or just cut out bands and use your "other" decorations to make it look similar to a crown. No crown is complete without some glitter, so use the glue to make pretty designs and sprinkle it on. Once dry, you can tape or staple your ends together. Crown mom queen, of course, since it's Mother's Day!

The Activity

Now that everyone looks the part of royalty, it's time to start the day. The queen (again that would be mom!), gets to rule the day. Pull out your best princess stories from the shelves, and act them out. You can also make up your own games and activities to play with the royal theme. The idea behind it all is to spend family time together, acting like a royal family.

In this fair kingdom on this lovely day, the queen is the ruler of all and gets to make the rules. Not only will this help create some very fun stories, but it ties in perfectly with Mother's Day.

Other Ideas

To make a more elaborate day out of this particular activity, you can also spend time making additional crafts. This would include swords for the knights of your kingdom, robes for the royal family, castles made from big boxes or chairs/blankets, etc. Following this theme, you can really get creative. Take some ideas from your story books and see what all you can recreate. If it's a nice day outside, take the games to the park or the backyard. Get the family pets involved even as "creatures of the woods".

For treats you can make princess cookies with pink frosting, or other tasty items from your cookbook. Depending on what type of kingdom and play you are focusing on, you may be able to make specific types of foods you would typically see. For example, some fairytale meals include a nice juicy ham displayed proudly on the table with pineapple slices and such. If you plan ahead of time, this can be your meal for the evening.

You can see this very simple idea can really go a long way if you use your imagination. Mom will always remember the day she got to be queen, and the kids will have a blast as well!
