Mother's Day Craft Projects for Kids: Bud Vase

Ann Siper
Kids can make this homemade gift for Mom and slip a Gerber Daisy in it! Keep in mind though that this clay craft project will need to be worked on over a period of days. So, do not do this the night before Mother's Day and expect a finished product!

Allow one day for the vase to dry and another day for the clear coat to dry!

This Clay Mother's Day Bud Vase Craft project is a great Mother's Day craft project for kids of all ages. Even older kids I love this fun Mother's Day craft project.

To Make a Clay Mother's Day Bud Vase Your Kids Will Need:

Air Drying Clay Product (Recommendations at the end of the article)

Pastel Tempera or Acrylic Paint

Clear Oil Based Polyurethane Paint

Paint Brushes (In a variety of sizes)

Clay working Tools (Recommendations for homemade ones at the end)

To start making your Clay Mother's Day Bud Vase break off a chunk of clay.

At this point you need to have the kids work the clay in their hands until it becomes softer and easier to work with.

The first step in any coil pot is to roll this air drying clay into a coil. The longer the coil the more you will have to work with. I like my coils to be about ½ inch thick.

Start making the base to your Clay Bud Vase by working the coil around in a tight circle. Work out until you have a circle the size or diameter you would like.

Typically bud vases are tall and narrow, which is perfect for holding only one flower. I recommend about 3 inches, but you can go as large or as small as you want.

Use your fingers and clay tool to rub and spread the clay together.

You can use a spray bottle full of clean water to occasionally mist your clay if it seems to be drying out.

Kids can also use plastic grocery bags to cover their clay while they work on other parts of the craft project.

Have the kids break off more clay and make coils again. Use the coils to work up the sides of the Mother's Day Bud Vase. Place the first coil on the base and keep adding to it. Work higher and higher.

Be sure to leave an opening at the top of the bud vase that is about the same size as the base. This will make a more symmetrical vase.

Use water, clay working tool, and your fingers to smooth the clay and make sure it is firmly attached to the base.

Once you have made your Clay Mother's Day Bud Vase the height you want it to be you can add embellishments like designs carved into the clay.

Let you air drying clay Bud Vase dry according to the directions on the package. Once your Mother's Day craft project has completely dried you can let the kids paint it.

Allow the paint to dry thoroughly and then paint the Clay Bud Vase with clear oil based polyurethane paint. You need to paint the inside as well as the out!

This will seal all if the hard work you kids have put into the Mother's Day craft project. Make sure you paint the inside of the Clay Easter Egg Vase as well. This will help protect the inside of the craft project where your water rests.
