Mother's Day Crafts for Kids

Laura Ward
Mothers love receiving handmade gifts from their children. Kids enjoy doing art and craft projects. This year, gather supplies and get busy making crafts that mom will cherish forever!

* Model magic can be used for many art projects. Because model magic will dry if you leave it out over a period of time, the possibilities are endless. Make mom a necklace or bracelet with model magic by rolling the model magic into small balls or rectangles. Poke a shishkabob stick through the middle of it to leave a hole. Then, let the model magic dry thoroughly and use markers or paint to add color to the "beads". String the finished beads on a thread and wrap up for mom!

*Handprint kits make a great craft idea for kids. You can purchase a kit from your local craft store and follow the instructions for capturing handprints or footprints. Write a nice poem to go along with the print.

*Purchase a pre-made cardboard photo frame from your local craft store. Glue beads, sequins, papers, glitter, pom pom balls, seeds, old puzzle pieces, buttons and other craft materials around the frame until the frame is as full as you like it. Add a picture of you and your mom together or include a drawing that you made for her.

*Purchase an apron from your local craft or fabric store. Using puff paints or fabric paints, decorate the apron. You can also add buttons or ribbons to add a special flare!

*In a canning jar, layer cake mix with m&m's, choocolate chips, nuts and toffee pieces. Attach a note with instructions on how to make the cake. Don't forget to tell mom what other ingredients need to be added to the mix! For a fun twist ask your child how to make the cake and write down what they say. Mom will probably get a good laugh over their described recipe!

*Using construction paper, scissors and other craft materials from around the house, create a card for your mom.

*Using two colors of your mom's favorite colors, make her a placemat by cutting strips from the papers. Weave the paper to create a placemat. Glue the edges down so that they are secure and do not come off.

*Decorate a clean toilet paper tube with markers, crayons, paint, sequins and other art materials. When the tube is dry, pick flowers or buy flowers and put them into the tube. Give the "vase" to mom.

*If you do not have any craft supplies on hand but still want to make something, draw your mom a picture of what you like about her. Write a story about how special your mom is to you.

Moms love any kind of art project that her child makes for her. Even young children can make something special for Mother's Day! It should not matter whether your child makes a collage or a card or an intricate piece craft. It truly is the thought that counts and mothers know that!
