One of my favorite crafts to do is a scrapbook. Just gather pictures of the children. Then give them some stickers, crayons, glue, decorative paper, and the pictures and let them create scrapbook pages for their moms. This can be simple and cheap or you can make it extravagant and expensive it is up to you how much time and money you want to put into it.
Every year at school we do a Mother's day card with the children. We have found a very cute design that says "Mom, I love you a bunch" and it is a picture of the top of a bundle of grapes. Then the kids use green or purple ink pads and dab their finger prints to form the bunch of grapes.
A ceramic stepping stone with colorful stones or the child's hand or foot prints in it is a great idea. This idea is a little more time consuming and is not great for younger children. We use aluminum pie plates and we fill them with plaster of paris. We then have the children push their hand into the plaster of paris to form their hand print. We usually write the child's name and the date in the plaster with a toothpick. We then let the children press stones into the wet plaster. This craft can sometimes take days to dry, once it is dry we just peel the pie plate off and you have a beautiful stepping stone for your garden.
Another very cute idea is to do the children's handprints on a ceramic tile to be used as a trivet. Ceramic tile is fairly inexpensive at your local flooring store. Just use tempera paint to make the child's handprint on the tile. Then write the child's name and the date on the tile with a permanent magic marker. Then you could paint over it with a sealer so that you can be sure that the paint won't fade away or be rubbed off. These can be used just as decoration or they can be used as coasters.
Remember back in school when your teacher used to set you in front of a black piece of paper and then point the projector at you and trace your silhouette on the paper. If you do this and then put a poem in the silhouette or even around it, it looks very cute framed. We used a poem I found online that talked about being your mother's shadow. We traced the children's silhouettes and then put the poem on the inside of the silhouette. The parents just loved them.
If you have children that are old enough to tell you a story, a cute Mother's day craft is a recipe book. You ask the children what's their favorite meal that their mom cooks. Then you ask them to tell you how she makes it. Write things down exactly as the child tells you. Compile all the children's 'recipes' into a book. The mothers will get a kick out of the funny things the children say. Some other ideas for a book would be to ask the children what their mommy does for a living, or why they love their mommy, or how do you make the perfect mommy, or any other question that your child might be able to answer about their mom. You will be surprised at some of the answers you get from children.
A few simple ideas are to buy some plain tote bags from the craft store and let the children decorate them for their mom's, if they are young children you can just paint the child's handprint on the bag. You can put children's hand prints on an apron, or pot holder, or dish towel. If your children are older then you can have them make mom a keychain with some beads and a charm. Homemade bath salts are another idea for the older children although these can be a little messy. We used Epsom salt, fragrance, and food coloring. Then we let the children pour them into empty jars and decorate the jars for their mom's.
