Mother's Day Events in Jackson, Mich., Offer Great Variety to Families

Events Around Jackson Offer Families Fun Choices on Mother's Day

Mother's Day celebrations vary from family to family. From making mom breakfast in bed to giving her a card, Mother's Day can potentially generate life-long memories. Families living near Jackson, Mich., have the potential to experience a bigger day than simply giving breakfast or a card. They have the chance to participate in a variety of local events designed to make Mother's Day memorable for the entire family.

Take Mom to Prison

Looking for a truly original Mother's Day destination? Treat the family to a Mother's Day historical tour of Jackson's famous prison. The tour is led by Judy Gail Krasnow, a historical artist and storyteller. Judy plans on beginning the tour at Mighigan's first state prison, which operated from 1838-1934. Then the bus heads to 4000 Cooper St., where guests visit a fully intact closed cell block, part of the largest state prison from 1934-2007.

The cost is typically $18 per person. On Mother's Day, however, moms are only charged $9. The event runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 100 Armory Court.

Wine and Chocolate

Make a reservation to take mom to the Lone Oak Vineyard Estate if she loves chocolate and wine. Tickets cost $10 per person and allow each to sample seven chocolates and seven wines. Tasting chocolates and sipping wine also provides a romantic setting, so husbands have the opportunity to impress their wives with this creative Mother's Day idea.

Lone Oak Vineyard Estate is located at 8400 Ann Arbor Rd. in Grass Lake. Seating is limited, so call (517) 522-8167 for reservations.

Care Home Visits

If your mom has passed, make another mom smile instead. Visit a care facility with your children to brighten someone's day. Some care homes plan formalized activities as well.

For example, the Ganton care home and rehab patients at the Countryside Retirement Community in Jackson are coordinating a Mother's Day Fashion Show Thursday. Share the love with moms or grandmothers who may not have local family by taking them a homemade card or simply stopping by to say hello. Doing so helps them feel special on Mother's Day.

Even if you do not live near Jackson, some of the above ideas may work in your local town. The main idea of Mother's Day, of course, is to celebrate moms around the world. It can be much more than a "Hallmark holiday" by choosing to make the day memorable for your mom and family with unique outings. Celebrate your mom this year!

I thought that was funny, "Take Mom to Prison." I guess there are a few who really feel that way about their mothers.
