Mother's Day Games and Activities the Family Can Enjoy

Mother's Day games and activities can be great fun not only for your mom but for the rest of the family as well. Here is one special Mother's Day game and other Mother's Day activities that everyone at my house participated in when I was growing up. Hopefully you can use or modify one or more, personalizing them to meet your family's own unique needs and interests.

The Mother's Day game that we particularly enjoyed when my sister and I were young involved hiding objects around the house and in the yard for Mom to try to find. Dad and my sister and I would get together a day or two before Mother's Day and make up a list of what the items would be. They might include anything from larger objects such as my dad's toolbox or a book to smaller ones such as one of my sister's bracelets or the cat's favorite toy. We would put different numbers on each of them that corresponded to the numbers on the list, from one to seven, and eventually hide the objects when we had the opportunity to do so. For my dad and my sister and me, this part of the preparation for the game, finding secret places and hiding objects without Mom's knowledge, was just as much fun as actually playing the game, and we always put significant thought and effort into it.

On Mother's Day, we would give Mom a large basket or two and the list and send her on her way to find the hidden objects. Sometimes she would look in what we considered highly unusual or silly places and this would be especially funny to us. At other times, she would have a particularly difficult time locating an item, and we would let her know if she was getting closer or further away, or we would give her some other clues to help her out. Once all the objects were located, however, she would give them to my dad who would then have my sister and I give out the special envelopes that corresponded to each of the numbers. That is when Mom got to open the envelopes that my sister and I had decorated and helped dad put together several weeks earlier. They included two handmade gift certificates from my sister, two from me, and three handmade certificates from my dad. The ones that my sister and I gave were always simple and did not cost us money. Examples included doing an extra chore each day for a week or completing homework each night for a week without having to be reminded so frequently. My dad, on the other hand, usually gave much more elaborate gifts such as a certificate for a night of dinner and dancing at a classy restaurant that he would take Mom to later that day. Another certificate usually included a check for Mom to purchase something she liked at one of the local department stores. The final one was usually one large or a combination of smaller gift certificates that allowed her to pamper herself with a manicure and new hairstyle or other beauty service of her choice or indulge in new books or arts and craft items that she enjoyed for recreation and relaxation.

As my sister and I got older and became teenagers, and our family grew larger with the addition of a baby brother, we began to do other activities for Mother'sDay. Sometimes it was as simple as presenting Mom with an attractive array of customized gifts she was sure to enjoy. At other times, activities included attending a particular event such as a special show or guided tour, going to visit someone Mom had been very close to but hadn't seen in quite awhile, or participating in a special Mother's Day Brunch or Mother's Day Buffet at a very good restaurant.

Mother's Day at our house was always a special day of recognition and fun that all members of the family looked forward to. Mom received loving attention and recognition for being the unique person we all very much loved and admired. Dad and my brother, sister, and myself had so much fun, and each of us, including Mom, created happy memories that we would cherish in the future. Who could ask for anything more?
