Mother's Day Gift Ideas for Single Mothers

Help Children Learn the Gift of Giving

Nannette Richford
Single mothers often feel a bit left out at Mother's Day particularly when their children are too young to take the initiative to create a Mother's Day gift on their own. Because there is no adult in the home to remind youngsters of this important day-and they haven't experienced a role model who makes it a point to show appreciation for Mom on her special day-mom is likely to be overlooked. You can help the single mom's in your life and teach help to teach their children about the importance of giving for a few dollars and a little of your time.

Take Kids Shopping for a Mother's Day Card or Gift
I'm all for hand made gifts, but sometimes buying a trinket for Mom is the best gift you can give children. It allows them to consider their Mom's likes and dislikes and encourages them to think about her needs instead of the their own. The size of the gift is not important-a trip to the dollar store will do. Help the child pick out an appropriate gift for Mom. Buy some gift-wrap and let the child wrap his own gift. This not only provides mom with something special on her day, it allows the child to give a "real" gift and provides him with real life experience in celebrating a special day for someone else.

Provide Simple Craft Supplies for Making Mother's Day Gifts
Kids love to make things to express their appreciation and Mother's Day is a great time for that. When provided with a few simple craft supplies they can make cards, posters or other gifts for mom. Make sure to include some hearts, cutouts from magazines and plenty of colored markers. Small stickers or glitter (if you dare) are also useful.

Help Kids Make a Mother's Day Coupon Book
Brainstorm with kids about the things they can do for mom and help them create a coupon book-but be sure to emphasize that they must be willing to actually do things they promise with their coupons. Keep it simple for young kids--feeding the dog, sweeping the floor or putting their own clothes in the hamper may be all they are ready to handle.

Help Kids Plan a Mother's Day Breakfast
This one can be done in two ways. Either purchase simple breakfast food like frozen waffles and a jug of syrup that children can prepare on their own or arrange for the child to order out-to you of course. Prearrange the time and breakfast foods so that you will be ready when the child makes that important call. Delivery breakfast and let the child do the honors of serving mom.

By helping kids plan a Mother's Day Celebration for single moms, you are doing everyone a service. The child learns about the importance of giving, how to show appreciation and builds confidence in his ability to express himself. Mom gets a little appreciation for all the hard work she does and you get the satisfaction of knowing you are serving as a positive role model in the lives of others.
