For each project you will need the following:
One 6 inch or 8 inch wooden embroidery hoop (use a larger one for a bigger hand)
One piece of white fabric or canvas that will fit inside the embroidery hoop
Rick rack or lace
fine point, permanent marker
fabric paint in your choice of colors
hot glue gun
small foam paint brush
The first thing you'll need to do when making this project is to trim your fabric. So that it fits neatly inside the embroidery hoop. After you have trimmed it to the right size lay in the fabric flat on a hard surface such as the table or countertop. It might be a good idea to place newspaper underneath the fabric, so that it does not bleed through. Put enough fabric paint on a paper plate and using the foam paint brush paint your child's hand, palm side up, until it is completely covered. Make sure you spread your child's fingers apart and get down into the creases with the paint. Next, spread your child's fingers apart and gently press your child's palm onto the fabric. When you are making a handprint of your child with paint, it helps to gently roll each finger when it is on the fabric. This ensures that the entire handprint will show when you lift up the hand. Now help your child to very gently lift his or her hand off to the fabric and wash their hands. Allow the handprint to dry thoroughly before continuing with the next step.
After paint has dried, use the fine tip permanent marker to write your child's name, age, date and year on the fabric underneath the handprint. Now it is time to put the fabric inside the embroidery hoop. Open the embroidery hoop and place the fabric on top of the smaller hoop. Now place the larger one on top and press into place. Make sure the screw is on top, as this makes a perfect way to hang it on the wall. Now tighten the screw and pull the fabric from the back so that is good and tight. If you have any fabric that sticks out around the edges, trim as close to the back as you can.
Using your hot glue gun go around the back of the food were the two troops in fabric come together. This helps keep the two hoops in place and it also keeps the excess fabric from raveling. Now it is time to decorate the front using lace or Rick rack. On the front of your project, glue lace or Rick rack around the outer edge and place a bow at the top just underneath the screw. When everything is dry, you have a perfect Mother's Day gift that will be treasured for years to come. This is a perfect project that can be placed on the wall or, it is small enough to display on an easel for a desk or tabletop decoration.
