Mother's Day Outings for Moms in Nursing Homes

Simple and Inexpensive Ways to Honor and Celebrate Your Mom

Mothers Day is the day we honor and celebrate our moms and show them just how much we love them. For a mother in a nursing home Mothers Day can be a lonely experience but there are simple and inexpensive ways you can celebrate the day that will lift her spirits and show your love for mom. Just be sure to keep in mind your mother's likes and dislikes as well as her physical and emotional abilities.

Mothers Day outings for moms in nursing homes need not be elaborate or expensive ordeals and will, in fact, be dependent upon your mother's health and physical abilities. For instance, is your mother ambulatory? Is she able to walk, sit and stand with minimal discomfort? If so, then a pic-nic in the park might be just the thing to lift her spirits and put a smile on her face. If your mother has trouble walking or getting up and down then you will need to have a wheel chair available for her. This need not spoil a day in the park but you will need to check ahead of time to make sure the area is wheelchair accessible. Trying to push a wheelchair over rough, uneven ground is hard on you and dangerous to your mother. Be sure you will have access wherever you go.

Moms in nursing homes may also enjoy Mothers Day outings to a near by zoo or botanical garden or perhaps a lunch at a favorite restaurant. A visit to friends or relatives is always a nice way to celebrate and honor mom as long as the physical and emotional demands on her would not prove too overwhelming. Likewise, before planning a trip to a favorite restaurant be sure that the menu offers food your mother can eat and will enjoy. The main thing is to do things that your mother enjoys and to keep in mind the physical and emotional effect any outings might have on her.

If your mom isn't able to leave the nursing home, if she is bed-ridden or must remain connected to oxygen or IV's then you may be confined to the nursing facility. Even so you can still celebrate with a little planning. Ask the staff if it would be possible to move your mother outside on a patio or porch in order to enjoy a meal together or to watch the grand children play. Maybe a visit from a family pet is permissible. Of course, you would want to find out if such things are permissible before hand. Some nursing homes even have family dining rooms available so family and friends can come and sit down for a meal together. Most nursing homes welcome and encourage such attention from family and friends.

The important thing is that you are honoring your mother on her day. Sometimes , the simple things in life are the best things. Moms in nursing homes will most certainly enjoy a Mothers Day outing that appeals to their interests and sentiments. Honor your mom and take her out on Mothers Day.
