First thing to remember is to let them do the composing. Keep it simple.Have a thesaurus and a rhyming dictionary on hand to help them find just the right word, or you can use rhymezone.com, an online rhyming dictionary and thesaurus. Provide markers, crayons, colored pens and pretty paper or cardstock.
On a plain piece of paper have them write down ideas, things they love about mom, what she looks like, things she has done for them. These ideas will be their building blocks. Help them to turn these ideas into simple sentences. You have to let them do the writing, but offer help with your thesaurus, and rhyming dictionary when asked. Resist the urge to rewrite anything for them. Most children at this point will have very strong ideas of their own and you will be amazed at what they come up with. If a child is struggling or they are in Pre-k or kindergarten, then they can make a simple poem using the first letters of Mother, Mommy, or Mother's Day. For example, M is for my favorite mommy, O is for your perfect omelets, T is for the time you spend with me. You get the idea, kids will have fun with it, Mom will think her kids are geniuses.
When they have finished composing, they can rewrite it on pretty cardstock, and then decorate it. I always take my kids to the local arts and crafts store and let them pick out their own supplies. Make sure the kids are well-rested and have had a healthy snack that is caffeine free and low in sugar. This will ensure maximum attention spans and brainpower. It is important to start early, kids have a propensity for using large globs of glue and heavy paint that takes at least twenty-four hours to dry.
Trust me Dad, your wife will love it, your kids will have the memory of a special time with dad, and you may even start a tradition your kids will carry over to Father's Day and even Grandparents Day in the future.
