Mother's Day: Tweeting #AMeal4Sarah Will Buy a School Meal for a Hungry Child

Josette Sheeran, the director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), is running a special Mother's Day tweet campaign to feed hungry children.

Every time someone tweets #AMeal4Sarah Ms. Sheeran will personally make a donation to buy a school meal for a hungry child. This school feeding campaign is in honor of her mother Sarah. You can visit Josette Sheeran's twitter page here .

The World Food Programme provides school meals for millions of children in developing countries. Many of the programs face severe funding shortages. WFP relies entirely on voluntary funding from the governments and the public.

There are nearly 1 billion people worldwide who suffer from hunger, many of them children. School meals play a crucial role in fighting hunger and poverty.

Sheeran writes "School meal programs have proven one of the most powerful food-based safety nets ever implemented. They sometimes are the only assured source of food for the children of desperately poor households. And they can deliver much more in the bargain. According to a recent World Bank study, school meal programs can supply about 10 percent of household expenditure for each child who participates, and even more when schoolchildren are given 'take home rations' for their families."
