Mother's Legacy: A Poem

She Gave Her Life Away

J. Ellen Fedder
The loss of a mother is a deep loss. When I lost my mother, I was touched emotionally and wrote a poem about her life and legacy, to be included in the bulletin at her funeral. Now, years later, after re-reading it, I find the poem fitting for the legacy of most mothers. A good mother lives her life to leave behind a great legacy.

If you and your siblings are looking for a poem for your mother's funeral or to remember your mother's legacy on Mother's Day, perhaps this poem might be just right. Let me share it with you.

Mother's Legacy

Our mother helped us reach our goals
Through sacrifice and care,
And when we struggled on the way
We knew her help was there.

She'd offer us advice and sometimes
Give a next egg stand,
Because she knew the difference
Might be in her helping hand.

Not only us, but others too
Have known her giving deeds,
For mother was a giver who
Was tuned to people's needs.

She mentored, she encouraged,
She enabled every day.
Her legacy lives on because
She gave her life away.
