Motivation #1: Remind your child he's smart.
Part of the reason that children fail in school is because no one believes in them. So, remind your child that he is smart and can succeed in school. Don't assume he knows this without you ever (repeatedly) saying it. You will see that as your child begins to believe in his own intelligence he will do better because he thinks he can.
Motivation #2: Give your child a few extra tools.
What did your child lack last year for school that made him fail? Is his computer outdated? Did he really need a tutor to help him in a specific subject? Think about and, then, go out of your way to deliver the goods. Set your child up for success by giving him everything he needs to do well.
Motivation #3: Spend time at your child's school.
Be a more active parent this year. Let go of your excuses. You can e-mail, fax and visit the school once a month and check on your child's progress. You can even go sit in on a few classes with your child to see how he interacts with the teacher and other students. Don't wait for a problem to occur before you decide to show up. Success is a journey, not a one shot deal.
Motivation #4: Chart your child's homework schedule.
Help your child succeed in school this year by charting his homework. This process could be as easy as putting a check mark on your calendar to indicate when assignments are due. This process will keep you alert to the fact that your child has homework. Then, when you need to crack the whip, you can do it because you know what's going on.
Motivation #5: Sign your child up for a school club.
One way to get your child motivated to do succeed in school is to sign him up for a club. School clubs have rules about grade point averages that their member's must achieve to participate. For a child who finds nothing fun about school, this is a way to motivate him to do well. His desire to be in the band might outweigh is dislike for homework and let him see a purpose in doing it.
Motivation #6: Offer your child incentives early in the year.
Let your child know in the beginning of the year that his life will be much easier and more fun if he does his homework. You can use incentives like extra minutes on his phone or a special outfit or more allowance. Put out the bait early and also follow-up with some consequences. Inform your child that he will do extra chores, not go out and watch less TV if he doesn't work hard in school. For most children, a combination of incentives and consequences work best and will help propel them toward success.
Use these six motivators and you will help your child succeed this year. Start right away, so you get into a pattern and obtain early positive results.
