Motivation at Its Best, Comes Out of Inspiration Not at Rest

Josephine Sheppard, MA, PhD, NHC
Motivation may appear to our own mind to come from events or individuals in our lives as reflected by our responses to them.

For example, one person may say she is motivated to exercise because of a friend or co-worker and the program they have been success with and therefore feel they can also do the same.

Another example may be another individual stating he feels motivated because he either got a raise or a promotion, or perhaps he is motivated when challenged with the knowledge that there is competition for a position he desires as well and begins to apply more detail and creativity to his work to show his aptitude for the promotion.

Often what we may not realize is that which we are motivated by is not the individuals or events outside our being. What motivates us, is the thoughts we are having about the individuals or events.

We are inspired, perhaps by these events or individuals, which then we internally make a choice to become motivated as a result of being inspired.

This is also the place where the misconception and our own thinking causes us to create self sabotaging choices or proactive choices, depending upon how we continue to process our internal mindset from that point on.

In other words, if you continue to believe that the only reason you can be or were successful in weight loss or in a promotion was as a result to external results, i.e. they only reason I lost weight was just because did what so-n-so told me or the only reason I was promoted was because my co-worker put in a great recommendation, then you may end up with only a short term result verses long term.

When you realize that the motivation is internal, you continue to motivate from within and also allowing yourself to be inspired along the way to keep motive in your desired path and goals. At the same time, ofcourse, you can consciously choose if this course is one you truly desire and is right for you or not, as well. Whereas, when you are not conscious of your own thoughts and behaviors that follow as a response to what you are believing, then you experience unconscious actions with results suited to them and by nature - a tendency to believe and/or blame circumstance, events and/or others for the experience; i.e. life happens to you verses you realizing that you are actively participating, regardless if you are aware or conscious of it or not.

With that said, let us note how some of some of the well known great minds have and can inspire us yet today.

"Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value." ~ Albert Einstein

"The greatest griefs are those we cause ourselves." ~ Sophocles

"If you want to see the true measure of a man, watch how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." ~ J.K. Rowling

"Don't count the days, make the days count." ~ Muhammad Ali

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear." ~ Ambrose Redmoon

"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude. Don't complain." ~ Maya Angelou

"It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage should be so rare." ~ Mark Twain

"Our greatest glory is not in ever falling, but in getting up every time we do." ~ Confucius

"Forget injuries. Never forget kindnesses." ~ Confucius

"Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Do not fear - only believe. All things are possible to him that believes." ~ Jesus Christ

"Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses." ~ Alphonse Karr

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined." ~ Henry David Thoreau

In summary, remember to allow your circumstance and others to inspire you; realize the motivation to act comes from the thoughts you are generating from within and then you can choose to follow through or not. By becoming aware of your own thinking processes in this manner, you are empowered, increase self awareness, self esteem, are pro-active in your own life because you are no longer creating a sense of feeling helpless or dependant upon the decision making or outside events to decide your fate. Courage grows within you to also follow through in a course of action as well and your resilience builds as you realize that even if an event does not go according to a desired plan, your still okay and are less likely to fall back into a hopeless or helpless attitude and are more likely to problem solve and recognize events as challenges and mere change.

Enjoy life for the journey it is, not an end result or temporary position to pass time. Relaxing with the process of living life, you can then allow yourself to experience the internal calm and peace that is a natural state of being when you're not pushing out of the nature of internal balance. So return to a sense of balance - realize you motivate yourself and allow inspiration; enjoy each day, as you are living it and allow your self to experience calm and peace that all is as it should be!
