Motley Crue, Poison and New York Dolls Rock the Seminole Hard Rock Live

Jimmy Collins

In a stroke of good luck for me, but bad for my sister who was sick, I got two free tickets to the South Florida stop on the Glam-A-Geddon tour headlined by Motley Crue at the Hard Rock Live, which is part of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Also appearing were legendary rockers Poison and the New York Dolls. Though all of these bands had most of their success in the 80s, this concert proved that some things do in fact get better with age.

The show started with the New York Dolls who have some of the original members back. They were surprisingly loud and the crowd reacted with a lot of enthusiasm as they heard classics like Talk to me Baby and Trash. I was personally not a really big fan of the New York Dolls in the past, as they were a bit before my time, but they showed that they did indeed deserve to share the stage with the other two legendary bands that would follow.

In what could have been a headline act, Poison was next on the stage. Brett Michaels and the entire original crew, which included Rikki Rockett, Bobby Dall and C.C. DeVille, were back in style and they came out swinging with Look What the Cat Dragged In. Poison played many favorites like Every Rose Has its Thorn and Talk Dirty to Me, but the main point of the band being on the stage was much more than music.

Poison was celebrating their 25th year together and they were so thankful to the crowd and all their fans in general. Brett Michaels was especially thankful and gave praise to all those who showed support while he went through his health issues last year.

Being a Poison fan in my youth, I was reminded why I liked the band so much back then. They truly enjoyed themselves on stage and though they had their problems in the past, the band came together and really rocked the stage. They topped off their performance with a special guest appearance from Lita Ford helping Brett Michaels sing Nothing But a Good Time.

Last on stage were the headliners, Motley Crue. All four original band members were back including Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee and Mick Mars. The show started off with several loud bangs and the amazing pyrotechnics that lasted the entire evening set the tone for the show. Motley Crue was just as energetic as they were almost 30 years ago.

Tommy Lee took several turns on his drum rollercoaster and even took one fan for a spin. Honestly, it was simply amazing that he could still be playing the drums while hanging upside down. In order to believe it, it needs to be witnessed.

At one point in the performance Vince Neil let the crowd know exactly how all the songs that were being played were determined. It was the fans who voted on the set list and the bands that are participating in the Glam-A-Geddon tour. That was a fitting fan tribute and was well applauded when announced. Vince Neil also made reference to the fact that Motley Crue has been around now for 30 years (though they did have a decade of turmoil) and that they have now played South Florida 31 times, which made their performance even more impressive.

The show ended with what looked like a grand finale on the Fourth of July. Then the members of Motley Crue drenched those in the front with bucket of red liquid, though I can't say for sure what it was.

The Glam-A-Geddon tour continues until August 5, 2011 and it is a show that should not be missed. I have to admit that I only went because I got free tickets, but knowing how great a show all three bands put on, I would pay to see any of them again, any day of the week.
