Motley Crue Theatre of Pain

The Bad Boys Go Glam with Hair Metal of the 1980's

Jay Braun
This was the third of their albums by Motley Crue. They released it 1985. This was just about the heyday of hair metal. This was a great departure in image from heavy rock to glam rock. They began wearing more costume clothes and not just black leather. They also used more much more make up than normal to go along with the glam look. This was rather popular during that period of time. They also included a cover of Smokin In the Boys Room that would become of their biggest hits at the time and a very popular video on Mtv. You can hear much more of a blues emphasis and influence in this sound. The album cover drew quite a bit of controversy as there is a pentagram on one of the faces. The Pentagram is a sign that represents the beast himself in Satanism.

Songs on this album include

1 City boy Blues

Definitely some blues in this one. There is even a harmonica played by Vince Neil in this song. It starts out like it will be slow but then gears up.

2 Smokin in the Boys Room

This was a cover of the Brownsville Station Song. They did not do it as good as Motley Crue would redo it though. The song is really about being young and rebellious.

3 Louder than hell

This song has some very good good guitar riffs and a really nice guitar solo.

5 Home sweet home

This is a 1980's power ballad. Tommy Lee plays piano on a part of the song. This is another one of their greatest hits.

6 Tonight

This is another great guitar piece by Mic Mars. Lyrics offend some, but that happened a lot during that area.

7 Use it or lose it

8 Save our souls.

There was some debate about this one. Some people think they are saying "save our souls for the devil", but they are actually saying "save our souls for the heavens" The do look at it as a mixed blessing though.

9 Raise your hands to rock

First time they used acoustic on a song with vocals. It is pretty good. This song reminds me a bit country influenced blues song.

10. Fight for your rights.

Good song. Not the best from the album or band, but a good song with a powerful message. It talks about people just being people and we are all the same

"You can't judge a man's soul by the color of his skin.........Martin Luther brought the truth. The color of our blood's the same"

This is one of my favorite records and I still listen to the old cd sometimes these days. They have several versions some of which have bonus tracks. This is a must own for any 80's rock fan.

I own and listened to the album.
