Motor Scooters: A Fun and Fuel Efficient Way to Ride Into 2009

Clark Richards
Like the perfect storm so often referred to when describing tragic circumstances, the perfect dawn of practicality is occurring in the motor scooter marketplace. With gasoline approaching and in some cases exceeding $4 per gallon, the heretofore lowly motor scooter is being reborn and enjoying a resurgent popularity. Virtually every demographic group in America will have an interest in these fun, efficient and fuel conserving vehicles which can attain extraordinary miles per gallon with some able to achieve triple digit results.

Numerous youthful baby boomers entering their golden years with sizable disposable incomes, the efforts of the green movement and the necessity of utilizing less gasoline will fuel this revival of the motor scooter and no doubt catapult a mediocre market into a dawn of new purchases. The anticipated result, already well underway, will be the arrival of numerous motor scooters and small motorcycles being piloted throughout a multitude of cities, small towns and neighborhoods in America by baby boomers as well as younger age cohorts who are seeking inexpensive and environmentally friendly transportation. Having enjoyed the riding experience in the 60's as teenagers when small motorcycles and motor scooters were the popular item of the time, senior citizens are leading the way and being joined by more exuberant youthful riders who are creating a motor scooter market of sizable proportions.

According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, during the first quarter of 2008, motor scooter sales were up 24 percent. Small and medium motorcycle sales were also up 7.5 percent. This is just the tip of the new interest that will sweep across what previously was only a small niche motor scooter market.

Motor scooters, in addition to being inexpensive and fuel efficient, are environmentally friendly and the basis of broad social interaction by an ownership base that has wide-ranging interests, avocations and professions. Motor scooters are reclaiming a lost popularity and offer a mode of transportation that is fun as well as practical. In Europe and Asia motor scooters are an acceptable mode of transport for virtually every social class which will no doubt of necessity be embraced by the American public.

Internet activity will expand substantially in the motor scooter arena and all ancillary aspects as owners of various makes and models discover their shared interests and affections. It will include such topics as riding apparel, purchases of accessories, repair parts, antique restoration information and social networking through a variety of clubs, groups, blogs and forums that will form networks centered on their shared interests.

In short, expect the motor scooter to claim a sizable portion of Internet activity throughout this year and well into 2009 and beyond.

Excellent article. I'd consider a scooter, for sure, if I lived somewhere other than Boston, where biking and walking in traffic makes me jittery!I still feel I need solid car protection from the OTHER driving folks. Should my next job have the benefit of a safer, suburban commute, I'll definitely reconsider.
