1. Verify your policy. Make sure none of your coverage is limited. Some companies have a winter layaway period where some coverages are restricted. You will want to contact your insurance company to make sure you are not limited in any area during any particular season.
2. Add extra liability coverage. If you are ever involved in an accident that causes harm to someone else or someone else's property, you could be in for a big payment. If you have a good number of assets you will want to protect them by getting that extra liability coverage.
3. Decide if you need medical payments coverage. This type of coverage will pay any medical bills you or your passenger sustain due to a motorcycle crash. I believe the highest amount you can get is $25,000. This figure would vary state to state so ask your insurance broker about it.
4. Are you interested in custom parts? If you want your insurance to pay for special additions to your motorcycle you will need to have added coverage. Special additions can include fancy rims, custom paint jobs, saddlebags, or chrome plating.
5. What are your rates? Make sure you shop around for the best rates. Consider contacting at least 3 insurance companies and see what they can offer you for the coverage you need. This is the same for any type of insurance. Some companies can be significantly higher than others so it is worth your time to shop around.
6. Is the company knowledgeable? You don't want a company that hasn't dealt specifically with motorcycle insurance. Like I said in the beginning paragraph, driving a motorcycle is different from driving a car. So your insurance needs will be different too. Make sure the company is experienced in handling motorcycle insurance and claims.
There are many sites online today that can help you find the right company. You can literally get a quote in minutes after filling out information on how much coverage you are looking for and what type of motorcycle you own. If you find a company you like there is always a phone number provided. Give the company a call. Some companies even have a live operator available to answer your questions through chatting (kind of like having an Instant messaging conversation).
