Motorcycle and Scooter Helmet Visor Art

Dr. David Leader
Motorcycling and scootering are sports that are as much about form and substance as appearance. There is a good reason for that. A noticeable appearance is a positive safety feature. Many articles and books on motorbike safety mention the advantage of wearing brightly colored jackets and helmets. Of course, some riders take this to an extreme with psychadelic colors and designs. Another preference for many riders is wearing a tinted visor to reduce solar glare. Combine the tinted visor and a rich design, and find a new addition to the cyclist's design arsenal, helmet visor art.

Visor art is available as film appliques from www.trscustomvisors.com. TRS offers many stock designs including a skull face, a toothy monster, and a hundred dollar bill. There are simple words such as "Crazy Bitch" and "SPECIAL PAYMENT". I can see some younger female riders sporting the face of the anime girl with flowing hair or the female eyes with pink background. TRS offers custom designs for individuals, teams and clubs. What does style like this cost? About $35.00 including shipping.

The TRS website cautions that their artwork may not be legal in all states. According to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicle (RMV) website, the only comment on tinted visors is, "Tinted eye protection should not be worn at night or any other time where little light is available." That means, keep a clear visor for late rides."

How easy is the visor design to apply? Well, they offer to do the dirty work for the puchaser free of charge. Do-it-yourselfers will find complete instructions on the TRS site. Basically, the design is a skin that adheres to the outside of the visor. The design incorporates many small holes throughout the skin to allow visual penetration. An important caution appears on the payment page: "DO NOT use this skin on your visor while driving in the rain. The rain fills up the holes and blinds you." That seems to be another important reason to keep a clear visor on hand at all times.

What is the ultimate in visor artwork? Check out Don Johnson's helmet designs on www.airbrushgallery.com. Designs are numerous and imaginative. A favorite must be the spiderman helmet. All of the designs show a high level of technique and originality.

Helmets are important motorcycle and scooter accessories. Full face helmets are universally agreed to be the safest. Perhaps these designs make wearing helmets more pallatable for the many riders who are concerned about their appearance.

  • Hemet visors can be beautiful.
  • Visor art is available as a stock applique or as a custom art piece.
  • Keep a clear visor handy for riding at night or in bad weather.
Visor art is attractive by itself or as part of an airbrush design over the entire helmet.
