Motorhome or Fifth Wheel Camper

Making the Choice Between These Two Can Be Difficult

Choosing between a motorhome and a fifth wheel camper is not easy and much of it depends on your lifestyle and what you are planning once you reach your destination.

When my wife and I were in the market for a RV, we had to make this choice based on our plans to tour the southwest and only stay in an area for a week or so. We made the choice of a Class A motorhome as it seemed the most likely to be able to pickup and move easily. When we travel across the country, we tow our Harley in an enclosed trailer so we have transportation when we park the motorhome. This has worked out fine for us in most areas as long as the weather stays decent enough for motorcycling. Last year in Alabama on the gulf, the weather constantly rained 24 days out of 28, so this made renting a car a necessity. At this point, we were wondering if we had made a mistake with the purchase of the motorhome.

After our stay in Alabama and we headed further west, it was nice as we could stop for a night, be setup in 30 minutes and move on the next day with a minimum of time. Of course, this was only possible if the campground had pull through sites available so we did not have to disconnect and then re-connect the motorcycle trailer.

We headed to an area called Kerrville, TX and my wife found the web site for a campground called By the River. This campground was off the main highway with almost no traffic noise, which was a big plus for us after several days on the road. As we got to know the people there, we started to think of this area as our winter home. The owners were great, we have found many new friends and the winter weather was a far cry from the cold of Ohio in February.

At this point, we again started to reflect on our decision to buy the Class A and now think we would have been wiser to purchase a fifth wheel camper instead. The reason being is we have decided that Kerrville will be our winter home as long as possible and a fifth wheel gives you added transportation by unhitching the truck once you get there. The motorcycle is a must as this area of Texas has some great roads for motorcycling and I can see a garage in the back of the fifth wheel is a must have. In the long run, I guess that gives us something to look forward to in the near future.
