Motorola Android Droid Review (A855)

The Google Android Operating System is What Makes the Droid a Droid..

Chances are you've noticed the commercials of the Motorola Droid exclusively for Verizon Wireless. Under the campaign of "Droid Does," Verizon and Motorola have created a competitor for the iPhone in the form of android smartphones. HTC has created the Incredible, another phone that uses the Google android operating system. But the Motorola A855 Droid is the first android phone on the market.

Features

One of the major differences of the Motorola Droid compared to other popular smartphones like the iPhone is that is has a full keyboard that slide out from underneath it. This is great if you're not a fan of touchscreens and luckily the Droid also includes a touchscreen keyboard if you don't like using the physical one. Unfortunately, neither option is particularly easy to use compared to other popular smartphones. The tiny buttons of the physical keyboard are hard to press in and the digital keyboard is not particularly impressive in its design. The screen is high resolution and nice, though not as vibrant and the HTC Incredible. The 5 mega pixel camera is nice and the flash really knocks it up on the list.

The Droid has some amazing web browsing features that are probably its highlight. With a real focus on its ability to quickly and easily zip around using impressive Google inspired search tools, the Droid is a phone that really feels like an internet phone. The ability to run more than one application at once is also a great feature. The voice activation is very impressive, but most of the time I would rather just type it in.

The Droid is the first phone to use Google Map navigation which is an excellent alternative to products like the Garmin in many cases. This application comes free with the phone. Motorola sold over a million Droids in the first 74 days of release which is about equal to the original iPhone. The iPhone 3GS, however, sold 1.6 million in that amount of time, so is still the dominant smartphone.

Conclusion

The Motorola Droid is a fantastic phone in a lot of ways. By copying the idea of the iPhone and combining ideas from Google and Verizon, a great mix has been created. What the Droid loses on are things like looks and ease of use. The system is excellent, but the keyboard is underwhelming. The Google features are very impressive and it is definitely a phone worth taking a look at. Consider this phone if you are in need of a smartphone.

Good review. I need a new Verizon phone but just can't quite commit to the Droid. I keep hoping to hear the iPhone is coming to Verizon, so I'll wait a little longer I guess.
