Motorola H500 Bluetooth Headset

A Handy Little Gadget!

Having a job which requires me to drive all over the state in which I live, I spend long hours in the car and on the road so I have a need for a hands free cellular phone device. Until recently I have always used a corded device which plugged into the telephone and ran, via a cord to a headset which I wore. This worked but had its drawbacks, namely the cord which would get in my way, become tangled and, inevitably, become frayed and torn.

The new "Bluetooth" wireless technology has been out for a few years now but I have shied away from it for two reasons. First, it was "new tech" and that always has a lot of bugs and kinks to work out. I would rather they get worked out on someone else's dime. Second, speaking of "dimes," new tech is expensive. I like to wait for it to be "tried and true tech" and for the price to drop accordingly.

In October of 2007 my wife and I purchased a matched pair of cell phones which are "Bluetooth" compatible. I looked online, at our carrier's website, and decided the prices have dropped nicely on good, named brand, Bluetooth products. I then took some time to read the product reviews and finally opted to purchase two Motorola H500 Bluetooth headsets. These are wireless, over the ear sets which simply hook over one ear and have a built in speaker and microphone. They are small enough to fit in my shirt pocket when not in use.

While I have no experience with other Bluetooth products I can say that these are far superior to any of the older corded hands free devices I have used. They took some effort to program to match the cellular telephone but, if you follow the instructions carefully it can be done by anyone. Once the Motorola H500 Bluetooth headset is programmed to your telephone you will find it fairly simple to use. There are only three buttons.

There are several "advanced features" but, to be honest, they are more trouble than they are worth. I dial and send calls from my handset and answer calls by hitting the main button on my headset. I have never found the "volume" buttons to actually adjust the volume one iota.

The batteries hold charges very well. I have owned mine for over six months now and I have never had it go dead. I do charge it over night almost daily. However I have let it go for up to 72 hours without a charge and it still worked well.

When driving I can use the Motorola H500 Bluetooth headset and keep my head up and eyes scanning the road the same as if I were talking with another person who would be seated in the vehicle with me. I make it a point not to dial my cell phone, though I do use voice activated dialing, or text message while driving as these activities would be distracting.

The major drawback I have with the Motorola H500 Bluetooth headset is the large dialing button. This button is too easy to accidentally hit. I tend to store the headset in my shirt pocket and my phone has voice dialing. I cannot begin to tell you the times I have accidentally called anyone and everyone on my calling list because that button was pushed by accident. It is truly annoying and I am still searching fro a way to protect the button. A belt pouch would be nice.

Otherwise I really like my Motorola H500 Bluetooth Headset and heartily recommend them if you are considering a Bluetooth purchase. It is one handy little gadget!
