Motorola Razr V3 Repair: How to Fix the Phone's LCD and Keypad

Chris Jones
The Motorola Razr v3 is an extremely popular phone. A number of different versions of the phone have been released including the v3, v3r, v3re, v3c, v3m, v3i and even the v3t. The v3, v3r, v3re, v3i, and v3t are gsm versions, which use a SIM card. Meanwhile, the v3m and v3c are on the cdma network that is usually associated with Verizon Wireless or Altell.

Since everyone has a phone, it would certainly be to everyone's benefit to try to fix phones. If your razr v3 is broken, it would definitely be easy to fix.

First you need to diagnose the problem and locate the source of the problem so you can repair it. I will break it down into a couple categories:

Repair: Red dot or White dot in battery compartment

The first thing to do is to open the battery compartment door and take out the battery. Look near the top middle and see if there is a red dot or white dot. If it is white, there is no water damage. No water damage means you can use the warranty on the phone. If your warranty expired (which is usually 15 to 18 months after the manufactured date), then you are out of luck. But not completely. You should look below for further instructions. If the dot is red, that means there is water damage and you should look below.

Repair: LCD Display is Broken or not showing anything or cracked

If the LCD display does not work, or you cannot see anything. Then try the following. First, put the battery in like normal. Then attempt to power on the phone by pressing the power button. Then notice if anything happens. Can you hear any sounds or vibrations? If you can hear startup sounds and/or vibrations, then that means the razr v3 main motherboard (lower bottom unit, where you put the sim card in) is intact and there is nothing wrong with it. If that is the case, I would suggest purchasing a broken Motorola Razr v3 that is for parts or repair on ebay. Or, you can purchase a new lcd on ebay for around $15-20. It is fairly cheap, but definitely worth the money since you can save yourself the $100-150 for buying a new phone. You should just repair your phone.

Repair: Phone works: LCD display turns on and there are sounds, but the buttons do not work

The best method for fixing or repairing the keypad is to connect the phone via an usb cable or Bluetooth to the program, Motorola Phone Tools (which can be obtained online through a Google search). Then try to press the buttons on the phone and see if it works. If it does, then that means your phone is perfectly fine and it is a hardware issue. The flex cable (which is essentially the keypad) is broken or possibly torn somewhere. This is a really cheap fix. All you have to do is purchase a new flex cable for the Motorola razr v3. On the other hand, if by connecting your Motorola Razr v3 to Motorola Phone Tools and you cannot press any buttons or it does not go through. That means there is a software issue with your phone. In this case, you can most likely bring it to your service provider.
