Mount Rainer is the largest peak of the Cascades Mountain range. It is located in the middle of the 368 square mile Mount Rainer National Park. There are more than 300 miles of trails spread across Mount Rainier National Park. There are 4 visitor centers within the park, however, only 2 are open year round and 2 are open for the summer months only. There are also some overnight accommodations for those who would like to stay for a longer period of time: The Paradise Inn and the National Park Inn, and both offering fine dining.

Mount Rainier National Park offers sports such as hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and tours. Whether you come for a scenic drive or to hike one of the many trails, you will enjoy the endless beauty that surrounds you in Mount Rainier National Park.

I have listed a few trails within Mount Rainier National Park that are easy for hiking with children:

Carbon river roadbed is 2.0 miles of trail through the rainforest.

Longmire's Trail is 0.7 miles round trip and begins just across the park road from the National Park Inn. Strollers can be used with a few short carries required. Signs describe the early homesteading and development of the mineral springs.

Lower Meadows can be reached by way of a steep paved ramp leading from the main trail head at the upper parking lot. The upper trails are very steep so use caution!

Nisqually Vista is a short trail that begins just south of the Visitor Center, it leads to an overlook above the Nisqually Glacier.

Ohanapecosh's Grove of the Patriarchs is 1.0 mile round trip that leads to an island in the Ohanapecosh River with a grove of ancient trees. Signs en route will explain the forest environment.

Ohanapecosh Hot Springs is 0.5 miles round trip and begins and ends at the Ohanapecosh Campground, behind the Visitor Center.

Sourdough Ridge is 1.0 miles and begins at the north side of the parking area at Sunrise and makes a loop through the Sunrise Meadows. On clear days, a gentle climb to the ridgetop offers breath-taking views.

A trip to Mount Rainier National Park is a great way to get away from it all and to spend the day together as a family. Connect with nature and reconnect with one another in these peaceful surroundings. Whether you choose to drive or hike through Mount Rainier National Park, be sure to pack a picnic lunch, bring along the camera and a sweater or coat for the change in temperatures. These will help to ensure an enjoyable experience for all.
