I know you are thinking that Mount Southington is smaller than many ski areas in Southern New England and also doesn't have the vertical elevation that other ski areas can boast about. Their are substantial benefits to choosing Mount Southington, that many of you overlook or don't take the time to realize.
Did your mother ever express to you the importance of the teacher/student ratio back when you were in elementary school? The idea of having one teacher dedicated to the smallest number of students was a big deal in the hopes that each student would receive more personalized attention. leading to more learned academic principles. Well, the same can be applied to Mount Southington. Mount Southington is a smaller ski area than many areas in Southern New England, but their is merit to this. First of all, the personalized attention, almost like you are part of the family and not just a number affords you, especially if involved in the learn to ski program, a better chance at learning the In's and outs of skiing. You also have the benefit of flying under the radar so to speak. By this I mean that instead of fighting the crowds that many of the larger, more popular ski areas draw, you can head to Mount Southington and spend more time skiing instead of waiting in line. Isn't that what you are there for... TO SKI! I hate to wait in line for a chair lift and also having to constantly be watching over my shoulder for the influx of other skiers flying down the mountain to get out of my way so i can continue down the mountain without getting involved in an accident.
If you are new to the world of skiing, what could be better than the personalized approach to learning without being overwhelmed by looking up and seeing the top of the mountain some 4000 feet above you with so many trails to make your head buzz. Being able to take in the skiing experience one snowplow at a time where you don't feel so threatened by the size of the resort can pay huge dividends. The fact that you can dedicate all of your attention to getting the most out of your adventure skiing without the hastles often associated with the larger ski areas, just makes one feel more at ease and not so stressed out.
I know there are more than just novice skiers out there! I get it, and that doesn't make any difference as far as not choosing to ski at Mount Southington. For you advanced skiers, you are looking more in terms of technical aspects of the ski area. Number and types of lifts, lift capacity, vertical height, snow making % and number of trails as well as the percentage breakdown between novice, intermediate and expert trails. This is fine and understandable as you should have an understanding of these key variables in making your decision to ski, or not, at the particular ski area in question. You may not receive the same adrenaline rush with skiing at Mount Southington as with some of the larger ski areas but you get other benefits that are similar.
Ski Southington has 8 chairlifts to get 6254 skiers up the mountain in an hour, so that reduces the wait time. Their is a nice diversity of trails with a total of 13 trails in a nice ratio of 33% novice trails, 42% intermediate trails and 25% designated as expert terrain, so you have a nice selection and diversity depending on your ability and openness for a challenge or a cascade leisurely down the mountain. There is 100% snow making on every single trail which should entice even the most critical ski fanatic to ski here because of the fact that the trails should be groomed and contain a nice base of snow, not grass, dirt and rocks. One other very important draw here is the fact that Mount Southington has night skiing on all of its 13 trails so your work or daily schedule shouldn't be affected as much giving you more hours in the day to be able to get out and enjoy time skiing in the great outdoors.
As with many other ski areas, Mount Southington has a dedicated and full service ski rental shop, snowboard terrain park called the "Drop Zone". For those of you that are thirsty or hungry and skiing is sure to do that to you, their is a cafeteria to help replenish your energy level. For those of you that may have forgotten something or are in the mood to shop, Southington also has a ski shop, so no worries.
So without further ado, load up the car, dress warmly, close the garage door, leave a light on and head out to Mount Southington for some exercise and relaxation at the same time, oh yeah and some skiing instead of traveling and waiting in line to get up the mountain.
