Mountain of Food Drive a Success

There are two news worthy items to talk about in the Metro Detroit area. Both have the common ties for helping out The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries. The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries is a non profit, organization that was founded in 1909. The service they provide to the community of Detroit is providing over 70,000 pieces of clothing to needy people in the Detroit area, in addition to 1 million meals. The DR MM also provides substance abuse rehabilitation, and has housing for teen mothers. The estimated population of homeless in the Detroit area is about 18,000, and it is said that 25% are children.

It is good to know that the Christmas spirit is alive and well, as 40 schools throughout the state of Michigan, collected money and canned goods for the Mountain of Foodcharity drive event, which benefits the Detroit Rescue Mission. Even with the state being hit hard with job losses, people still came out and donated for those less fortunate. On November 8th, at Eisenhower High School, located in Shelby Township, there was surprise visit from Mike Furrey, from the Detroit Lions, who signed autographs for the residents dropping off canned goods. The final tally of food donated is said to be over 2,000 canned goods, as well as $17,000 in monetary donations. Also noting that at the Hamlin Pub, in Shelby Township on November 17th, donated a portion of their sales to the Mountain of Food Drive.

Another news worthy item, is about a local teen, who started collecting winter coats for children, and adults, for his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project. His goal was to collect about 50 coats, but with his troops help, friends, and the community, they collected 483 coats to give to the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.

It is nice to see, that in a struggling state, that people are reaching out and helping those who are effected by this downward spiral of the economy. Now, with all the help and donations to the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, they can continue to help more people in this hard time. With these generous acts, people will have a warm winter coat, and food. In a world that sometimes seems so cold, it warms the heart to hear of generous acts of kindness, especially during the holidays.
