Mountain Sunrise Horse Pellets

When dealing with older horses you have to have feed that is palatable, healthy, and often most importantly, easy to chew and digest. People spend lots of money each year trying to provide their horse with the best diet they possibly can. There are many feeds on the market these days especially formulated for the elderly horse. Yet sometimes it's the simpler things that are often the best.

Instead of feeding a prepared feed that has been processed, vitamins, minerals, and other stuff added to it, I simply use Mountain Sunrise hay pellets. These pellets are simply chopped and compressed hay. They contain no binders, fillers, or added vitamins and minerals. This makes them easier to break down than normal hay pellets and continues giving horses the roughage they need without the sugars often found in other feeds due to the molasses content.

I have been impressed with the quality of the Mountain Sunrise pellets. The horses enjoy eating them and are usually nickering eagerly for them. Probably the best proof to me, are the three older horses in my barn that maintain their weight on the Mountain Sunrise timothy pellets. This includes a 30 plus year old pony that has lost several of his teeth. He has no issues with chewing the pellets and doesn't need any other added supplements to maintain a healthy weight.

In addition, when rehabilitating a mare that had suffered from starvation, the timothy pellets gradually added weight back onto her thin frame without problems.

I don't believe the pellets are a complete diet in and of themselves, though I am sure there are people that feed them that way. The horses in my care also receive grass hay and other supplements as needed. Every area of the country is different, so vitamin and mineral requirements are different and the horse should be supplemented according to its needs.

I do like that the pellets do not already contain added vitamins and minerals or other supplements. For some people, they love the convenience of having their horse's feed already mixed and ready to feed. Since I care for many different horses, I prefer being able to tailor a diet to each horse no matter age or health. These pellets give me the freedom to do so.

I do not use the alfalfa pellets as a personal preference as I have several horses allergic to alfalfa and don't want to take any chances of mix ups. But I have used and like both the timothy and Bermuda pellets.
