Mounting a Laptop on a Desk

Jamie Brown
According to Cornell University Ergonomics Web, the ideal placement for a computer monitor is so that the user can look at it straight on without bending your head up or down.Unlike a standard computer monitor, a laptop is a smaller, more compact unit. When you place it on a desk you may have to bend your neck down slightly to see the monitor correctly. Mount it with a laptop arm to resolve this issue--it's usually a simple six step process that you can complete in an hour or so.

First of all, what do you need?

Laptop arm with mounting screws

Drill with screw bit

Wrench or pliers

1. Measure the thickness of the desk surface before you proceed. You will have to place a screw through the desk to mount the laptop arm. If you have a marble or steel desk, you may want to reconsider mounting the laptop in this manner (use a platform mount instead).

2. Decide if you want to mount the laptop arm from the side or from the back of your desk. If you have a deep (wide) desk, this is an ideal option. If you want to mount the arm base from the side, choose the opposite side from where you place your mouse.

3. Position the laptop tray (holds the actual laptop) so that the tray sits at the very middle of the desk where you sit. Ask your buddy to hold the arm in place as you're attaching the laptop mounting arm on your desk.

4. Use your drill to insert the screw through the laptop arm base and desk securely. If necessary, use an awl or drill bit to start the hole first.

5. Use your wrench or pliers to securely screw on the washer (also comes with the mounting kit) underneath the desk. You are now ready to mount your laptop on the desk.

6. Place your laptop on the mounting tray and position it up or down if necessary so that you can look directly at the screen without bending your neck. After mounting your laptop in this way, you can move the arm around or out of the way as you handle other duties on your desk.
