Mourning the Loss of a Great Captain- Phil Harris of F/V Cornelia Marie

k. ferguson
For anyone who has ever watched, or even heard of the show "Deadliest Catch" on Discovery Channel, sad news came out recently that our one of our beloved captains passed away.

Captain Phil Harris passed away on Tuesday night, February 9th, 2010 after suffering a stroke a few weeks earlier, (January 29). He was 53 years old, but lived more life that most of us will ever dream of. He was the captain of the F/V Cornelia Marie, a crab boat in the Bearing Sea. This boat was my favorite of the five or so they focused on over the last few years. I loved how he ran his boat, talked to his crew and never backed down. In Season 4, when the boat was hit by a rogue wave (if I remember correctly), he was thrown from his bunk and hit his dresser. After that, he was coughing up blood. He eventually went and got checked out and sadly, was no longer able to sit in his Captain's chair that season. He has a blood clot and they did not want it to travel to his heart, so he had to sit the next season out.

When he returned to the chair last year, all of us Capt'n Phil fans were in heaven. Our beloved Phil was back and as cranky as ever. I have never met Phil Harris, and now I never will... but seeing him on that show makes me think I knew a part of him. Watching him go through his ordeal was painful and I am sure Kleenex stock went up with all the crying most of us did.

Sadly, he is now in heaven and we are left mourning the loss of a wonderful man. Again, I never met Capt'n Phil, but I am heartbroken that he is gone. I am grateful that he was not lost at sea... but still crushed that he is gone. The F/V Cornelia Marie, and all the other crabbing boats, now has a Guardian Angel watching out for them.

Please visit the F/V Cornelia Marie website, (click here) to read more about this wonderful man, his family and his legacy.

I have included links to some of the other Deadliest Catch crab boats so you can read their memorials to him. I have also included Captain Phil's own webpage, and also Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch link. (See below).

I have read so many wonderful memorials to Captain Phil. I needed to write one, myself, to help the pain... to stop the tears that well up...

I too wrote an article about this dear man. He came into my tv and became a family member. I especially loved the practical jokes the crews did to each other and when there was a marathon on; we watched for hours. I am so sad that he is gone and hope the Cornelia Marie lives on with Josh and Jake!
