Movie Preview for March 21st, 2008

Luke M.
I love movies. I look forward to seeing almost every movie that comes out. There's always a question of whether or not it's a good movie. As a seriously moviegoer, you've got to keep your mind open. Perhaps the most unlikely film will be your favorite film of the year. You never know. So I have gone ahead, taken a look at some movies coming out in March and I decided to give my readers a glimpse at some of those movies. Once you've read what I've got to say, it'll be up to you whether or not you want to see the films listed below.

Drillbit Taylor

Directed by Steven Brill
Written by Kristofor Brown and Seth Rogen

Starring Owen Wilson, David Dorfman and Leslie Mann, Drillbit Taylor looks like an engaging, hilarious comedy about three boys who want protection from the bullies at school. They seek out a bodyguard in Drillbit Taylor (Wilson). He happens to be the cheapest and best option they can find. Originally from the mind of Breakfast Club and Home Alone creator, John Hughes, I don't see how we can go wrong with this. However, don't forget, Hughes hasn't really been punching out the best stuff in the last 15 years (101 Dalmations, Home Alone 3).

More of the principle cast

Josh Peck as Ronnie
Alex Frost as Filkins
Valerie Tian as Brooke
Troy Gentile as Ryan

Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns

Directed by Tyler Perry
Written by Tyler Perry

This looks like an engaging comedy about a single mother, Brenda (Angela Bassett) who goes to the funeral of the father she never knew. She's quickly introduced to the Brown family. You've got many more funny and talented people in this movie, including Tyler Perry himself as Madea. I just saw the preview for this movie a week ago. It's still fresh in my mind, because what I saw was that intriguing. Plus, I've always liked Angela Bassett's talents. Given the limited amount of promising movies for March 21, 2008, this will definitely be one I'll be checking out.

More of the principle cast

Sofia Vergara
Jenifer Lewis as Vera
Rick Fox
Margaret Avery

The Grand

Directed by Zak Penn
Written by Zak Penn and Matt Bierman

Starring Woody Harrelson, Cheryl Hines, David Cross and Dennis Farina, this mockumentary is about One Eyed Jack Faro (Harrelson) entering the World Championship of Poker to help save his grandfather's hotel casino. A real estate developer is scheming to tear down the casino. One Eyed Jack Faro keeps upping the ante. Now to be perfectly honest, this information is questionable given the lack of info available on The Grand. I might be more helpful to you if I had seen a preview. But, I've always kind of enjoyed Woody Harrelson's performances. We won't know anything more about this movie until March 21st.

More of the principle cast

Julie Claire as Dr. Jamie Sellers
Mike Epps as Reggie Marshall
Judy Greer as Sharon Andrews
Werner Herzog as 'The German'

Boarding Gate

Directed by Olivier Assayas

Starring Asia Argento and Michael Madsen, written and directed by Olivier Assayas comes this erotic thriller about Sandra (Argento), a former prostitute, and Miles (Madsen), her onetime pimp. Brought back together after a separation, Sandra and Miles are no longer who they once were, but their kinky sexual relationship is rekindled nonetheless. Meanwhile, Sandra has become entangled in a love triangle with a pair of drug-runners. Eventually, sexual intrigue and a botched drug deal combine to complicate matters for all involved. Boarding Gate was screened at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.Written by Olivier Assayas

More of the principle cast

Carl Ng as Lester Wang
Kelly Lin as Sue
Alex Descas as Andre
Kim Gordon as Kay

Planet B-Boy

Directed by Benson Lee

This is a documentary on b-boying or should I say, break-dancing. Discover the people who bust the moves in many different urban cultures around the world.

Movies coming out on March 21, 2008

Shelter

Directed by Jonah Markowitz; starring Trevor Wright, Tricia Pierce, Christina Blevins, Matt Bushell, Cherese, and Caitlin Crosby.

Under the Same Moon

Directed by Patricia Riggen; starring Kate del Castillo, Eugenio Derbez, America Ferrera, Jesse Garcia, Adrian Alonso, Maya Zapata, and Jacqueline Voltaire

Personal note: I am planning on seeing at least one of these movies. But I am beginning to see how the writers strike in Hollywood is affecting the industry. I hope they settle it soon or people might be too afraid to hand over 7 to 9 dollars for a ticket when something really great comes out.
