Movie Preview for September of 2008

Luke M.
I love movies. I look forward to seeing almost every movie that comes out. There's always a question of whether or not it's a good movie. As a seriously moviegoer, you've got to keep your mind open. Perhaps the most unlikely film will be your favorite film of the year. You never know. So I have gone ahead, taken a look at some movies coming out in September and I decided to give my readers a glimpse at some of those movies. Once you've read what I've got to say, it'll be up to you whether or not you want to see the films listed below.

Burn After Reading

Written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen
Release date: September 12, 2008

Fresh after the success of their Academy Award-winning, No Country for Old Men, Joel and Ethan Coen seem to be going back to the time when they were making us laugh. Burn After Reading looks like a Coen-style comedy in the tradition of Raising Arizona and O' Brother Where Art Thou. This time around, the Coens are giving us a dark comedy - a crime comedy. This time, they're using Brad Pitt as Chad Feldheimer, George Clooney as Harry Pfarrer, and John Malkovich as Osborne Cox. In a plot that has Pitt's Chad Feldheimer, a gym employee fighting Malkovich over a CD, we can expect a lot more laughs from Burn After Reading than some of the other comedies this year.

More of the principle cast

Frances McDormand plays Linda Litzke
Tilda Swinton plays Katie Cox
David Rasche plays CIA Officer
J.K. Simmons plays CIA Superior

Righteous Kill

Directed by Jon Avnet
Written by Russell Gewirtz
Release date: September 12, 2008

They were together in The Godfather Part II and Heat, but they've never worked, side by side before. Here, Righteous Kill puts Robert De Niro next to Al Pacino as a pair of experienced detectives. The detectives, Turk (De Niro) and Rooster (Pacino) are trying to solve a murder that may or may not be related to a case they solved years ago. There may be a serial killer on the loose and they may have put the wrong man in prison. However, I suspect there may be some surprises awaiting us in Righteous Kill that we can't see in previews and read about on the net. With De Niro and Pacino working together in a film certainly makes this thriller worth seeing.

More of the principle cast

50 Cent plays Spider (as Curtis Jackson)
Carla Gugino plays Karen Corelli
John Leguizamo plays Detective Simon Perez
Donnie Wahlberg plays Detective Ted Riley

The Women

Directed by Diane English
Written by Diane English
Release Date: September 12, 2008

In this remake of the George Cukor 1939 classic, The Women, a wealthy New York woman leaves her cheating husband and befriends a group of other society women while at a resort. Instead of Norma Shearer as Mary Haines, you have Meg Ryan in the role. Instead of Joan Crawford as Crystal Allen, you have Eva Mendes. Then, you've also got Annette Bening playing Slyvia Fowler. Simply put, if you liked Sex and The City, you might love The Women.

More of the principle cast

Debra Messing plays Edie Cohen
Jada Pinkett Smith plays Alex Fisher
Bette Midler plays Leah Miller
Candice Bergen plays Catherine Frazier

My Best Friend's Girl

Directed by Howard Deutch
Written by Jordan Cahan
Release date: September 19, 2008

This looks like a funny romp. You've got Dane Cook as Tank, a man who prides himself on being able to detract women and his best friend, Dustin (Jason Biggs), who is in love with Kate Hudson's Alexis. Unfortunately, she doesn't love him back. I guess Dustin tries to show Alexis that there are worse men out there than him by hooking her up with Tank. Given the cast and story, I'm looking forward having a few laughs at this movie.

More of the principle cast

Lizzy Caplan as Ami
Alec Baldwin as Professor Thompson
Rakefet Abergel as Mary or Heavily Pierced Kid
Mark Adair-Rios as Lucky

These are ALL of my list of movies I want to see :D

The Women sounds like my kind of movie. I have to agree that you just never know which new releases will be a personal favorite. I expected to like Jumpers, but I found it to be way far out and too unrealistic to really enjoy. I was also mildly disappointed by Fools Gold, and I can't wait to watch Bangkok Dangerous, but then I am a total Nick Cage fan.
