Movie Primer: 9

This is a short primer for the unique animated film simply called 9. This film will have its wide release on the only proper date it could have August 9th 2009. The trailer for this film can be found at http://www.apple.com/trailers/focus_features/9/

The Plot: This epic fantasy takes place in a world like ours that has suffered a terrible future. A scientist trying to help rebuild the world after a devastating war builds machines that then turn on him. The machines build more of their own kind and soon wipe out all of humanity. That is where the movie starts but all hope is not lost for the scientist also made nine rag doll creations that still survive and somehow hold the hope of humanity on their little shoulders. Now this might sound like a kids movie but one look at the trailer and you will see this is a dark, stunning action filled tale of adventure.

Star Power: Thought you won't see many familiar faces in this movie you will hear some pretty famous voices. The lead character "9" is voiced by Elijah Wood and Jennifer Connelly will provide the voice for the brave fighter named "7". John C Riley will also play one of the rag dolls, as will Martin Landau and the always-odd Crispin Glover

Behind the Screen: In 2005 Shane Acker made a short film called 9 that got nominated by an Academy Award. Even though it didn't win it certainly made an impression because Tim Burton and Timur Bekmanbetov (the director of Wanted and Night Watch) joined forces to make this feature length version happen. Shane Acker is still directing this time around and wrote the script for the longer version as well.

What to expect: Just watch the trailer and you will see that this might just be one of the best movies of the fall season. The visuals are unlike anything you have seen on the big screen. The action looks amazing even if the actual scale of the adventure is small. These dolls might not be very big but they do some pretty amazing things. Still, this is not just a simple action movie, the feel from the trailer is much more epic. There are some big concepts at work here and some deep emotion in these little rag dolls that are trying to survive against some pretty starling odds. I predict most folks who watch this movie are going to be swept up in it.
