Movie Primer: All About Steve

All You Need to Know About This Quirky Romantic Comedy

This is a short primer for the upcoming comedy All About Steve. This film will have its wide release on August 4th 2009. The trailer for this film can be found at http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/allaboutsteve/

The Plot: If this movie was not made as a charming comedy and didn't start Sandra Bullock, it might seem like the plot of a stalker like thriller. Mary is a crossword puzzle designer who is a little odd. She goes on a blind date with a cameraman named Steve and falls in love with him at first sight. The only problem is that she comes on so strong that Steve wants nothing to do with her. He uses his gig as a world traveling cameraman to run away from the well meaning Mary who decides to follow him. On her quest to prove her love she meets interesting people and starts to prove to everyone that she is not a stalker, just unique. Then she ends up getting into her own spot of trouble while following her love into danger.

Star Power: The two romantic leads in this movie both have had amazing summers in 2009. Sandra Bullock who plays Mary has had her most successful movie to date just recently in The Proposal and Bradley Cooper gained a great deal of exposure with the surprise summer hit The Hangover. The always-amusing Thomas Haden Church plays the manipulative reporter that works with Steve. He spends most of the movie egging Mary on just to mess with Steve.

Behind the Screen: For director Phil Traill, this movie will be his big feature debut. Before this he mainly did smaller films that he also wrote and directed episodes of TV shows like My Boys and Kath and Kim. Kim Barker who is also a fairly new talent in Hollywood writes the oddball comedy. This is her second script that has been made into a feature film. Her first was the 2007 comedy License to Wed.

What to expect: One thing you should not expect is your typical Sandra Bullock romantic comedy. Sure the actress is still playing quirky but she borderlines on unhinged. The movie is more about the comedy than the romance. Mary is the kind of character that makes you kind of cringe yet you sort of start to like her a lot. Really the whole movie is going to be riding on how well Sandra plays this character. Its either going to seem to silly or strange for most people or folks are going to connect with Mary. Considering Sandra Bullocks and Bradley Coopers recent track record it seems likely folks will find that connection.
