All You Need to Know About the Drama/comedy Coming Out This August

This is a short primer for the 2009 drama/comedy Julie and Julia. This film will be released on July 7th 2009. The trailer for this film can be found at http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/julieandjulia/

The Plot: This movie is kind of like two films swirled together. It tells the story of Julie Powell, a frustrated temp, that decides to take on the difficult task of completing all 524 recipes found in Julia Child's book Mastering the Art of French Cooking in just one year. The rest of the film focuses on Julia Child herself as she struggles to make it as a chef early on in her career in France.

Star Power: This movie packs a one-two punch when it comes to female talent. Julia Child will be played by Meryl Streep who has not only won countless awards but lately has become the queen of surprise summer hits. Rising start Amy Adams (who recently worked with Meryl in the film Doubt) will play Julie. The talented actor Stanely Tucci will play Julia Child's husband during her part of the film.

Behind the Screen: This movie is in fact adapted from two books. One is Julia Child's autobiography while the other is the actual book Julie and Julia. Merging these two stories set fifty years apart is no easy task for a writer or a director. Skilled veteran Nora Ephron has taken on the job of both. While Nora has done many movies over the years she is most likely remembered for writing When Harry Met Sally and directing/writing Sleepless in Seattle.

What to expect: It will be no surprise to anyone when Meryl Streep nails her portrayal of Julia. At this point in her career based on what she has given us we expect nothing but perfection and that is most likely what we will get. What might surprise a whole lot of folks is how often they will find themselves laughing and also how much this movie might affect them. On the surface it might look like just a movie about cooking but the recipe here is more complex than meets the eye. Expect the writing to be sharp and the acting to be stellar all around.

Well, I finally saw it and wrote my impressions in an AC article called Julie & Julia & Book Publishing. Didn't spend much time talking about the performances but I think Meryl Streep may add another Oscar to her mantle.
