The Plot: The story behind Paper Heart at first appears to be very simple. Comedian Charlyne Yi does not believe in nor understand stand love. She wants to make a documentary with her friend Nicholas about the subject of love to try and figure it out. Than she meets actor Michael Cera and she starts to fall for him. The two young artist try to develop a relationship but find that it is hard to do with camera's following them around. Its at this point that your realize that you are might not just be watching a documentary. That's because this film is really a love story presented in the documentary format. What this means is that you have an infusion of real life documentary interviews and a romance story that is at least a bit scripted. All the folks in the movie are playing themselves but the lines of reality are a little fuzzy.
Star Power: Michael Cera is the biggest name in this movie and he is playing himself, sort of. He was most recently seen in Year One earlier this summer but is best known for Superbad and Arrested Development. The star of the movie is Charlyne who is a comedian, who has gathered a pretty big following in LA but has not done a lot of movies. She had a small role in the Judd Apatow comedy Knocked Up.
Behind the Screen: The director of the film is Nicholas Jasenovec who also breaks the forth wall during the filming of this movie by becoming one of the characters. He is playing himself as he directs the film. He also co-wrote the movie with Charlyne.
What to expect: So I know it all sounds a little bit confusing. Is it a documentary or is it a comedy romance story? What's great about this movie is that it appears to be both. In a world where so many movies seem to fit into an easy little genre box this movie defies definition. It is its own very unique thing. So expect to be surprised and to a laugh at least a little. Maybe even learn a thing or two about love.
