Movie Review -

A Female CIA Agent is Accused of Being a Russian Spy

Mary Carol Herwood
Without Angelina Jolie, this film would not have made the grade, though it is an action-filled thriller and keeps the viewer on edge throughout the entire movie. Angelina portrays a CIA agent, Evelyn Salt, who was raised in Russia under strange circumstances. She is highly regarded in the CIA until a Russian defector outs her as a double agent who will be the assassin of the Russian president when he visits the States for the funeral of the deceased Vice President of the U.S.

Her co-worker Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber) sides with the group who suspect that Salt is indeed a double agent working for the Soviet Union. The viewer is then taken on a hectic ride as Salt manages to elude the chase. Scaling down a ten-story elevator shaft is just one of her talents. Karate moves against those who get too close are a sight to behold. We are enthralled when she jumps from an overpass onto a passing truck with a wide top, then changes truck tops when those in pursuit catch up to her.

The part of Salt was originally intended for Tom Cruise who bowed out because of other commitments. The gender change of the protagonist makes for a far more interesting film; Angelina Jolie has a star quality which never fails to generate a box office hit. Her presence appeals to a female as well as a male audience. Needless to say, she carries the movie from beginning to end. Her endless attempts at disguise enable her to carry out several wardrobe changes, which of course keeps the eyes of the audience glued to the screen.

Who is Salt? Is she a Russian spy or is she a dedicated CIA agent? Or is she somehow both? A recent story about sleeper agents who train for years before they become active gives some legitimacy to the premise. It is a strange twist that has never been portrayed in a film previously. And what about her co-worker Ted Winter? Are we in for another surprise here? You will have to watch to see how this all plays out.

I was won over by Angelina Jolie's acting ability in this film. Prior to this time, I had lukewarm feelings for her, both personally and professionally. If you would like to be transformed in your opinion about her, you must see "Salt." Implausible, yes. Entertainment, a definite yes.
