Movie Review: Adventures of Power

March to the Beat of Your Own Drum During the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics

Aly Adair
The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics are kicking off Friday, 08/08/08 with all the world's best athletes gathering together with dreams of winning Olympic gold. Preparing for the Olympics takes a lifetime of mental and physical endurance unlike any other competitive drive to make dreams come true. The ultimate Olympic win or lose can change a young Olympian's life forever. We learn from the movie Adventures of Power that the road to making dreams come true includes more than just the fast lane to gold. Sometimes, dreams come true when you learn to march to the beat of your own drum like Jim McKay and the Olympic athletes highlighted in this Associated Content article: A Tribute to Jim McKay: My Favorite U.S. Olympic Athlete Moments in History. The movie Adventures of Power debuted at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and is a powerful lesson in overcoming obstacles and ultimately achieving your dream. Adventures of Power is the story about a small town young man named Power, whose dream is to become the best air drummer in the country. Ironically, the real U.S. Air Guitar Championship is also scheduled for 08/08/08 in San Francisco, the same day as the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. No matter what the competitive event is in life, they all have the same common goal: achieving your dream.

I saw the movie Adventures of Power while volunteering at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, and while it is not an award-winning effort at independent filmmaking, the movie Adventures of Power is an inspiring story about achieving your dreams that is worth watching. Adventures of Power is about a young man named Power, who works at a New Mexico mine where his father is a union officer and calls for a strike. The mineworkers, who make up most of the town's population, support the strike despite the mineworker's poverty-level quality of life. The strike shatters any hopes the nerdy Power has of becoming a champion air drummer and Power struggles with his loyalty to his father and the mineworkers' purpose for striking.

Nevertheless, Power commits to the bigger need of the town, and in a seemingly divine twist of fate, Power meets other air drummers in the union underground who encourage Power to pursue his air drumming dream. Against all odds and against the work ethics of the small mining town, Power sets off across the U.S. to compete in the national air drumming championships. In the end, Power is the one who teaches the people of the small mining town how to march to the beat of their own drum to accomplish their dreams. I highly recommend seeing the Adventures of Power for a feel-good experience if you are struggling to overcome obstacles in pursuit of your dreams. Even though being the greatest air guitarist or air drummer in the world is not an Olympic event, who in their life has not picked the strings of their air guitar to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, or maybe even Prince? Who has not banged their air drum drumsticks with Neil Peart of Rush, Keith Moon of The Who, Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones, or Bill Bruford of Yes? Who has not had dreams of being the best at something?

Good luck to all of the Olympic athletes at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Whether you win or lose, the lesson from the movie Adventures of Power is that you marched to the beat of your own drum in pursuit of your dream. That lesson is worth its weight in gold.
