"You Again" was directed by Andy Fickman, who comes across in the special features like a guy who likes to have fun, but borders on being the "annoying" having fun guy. The movie seemed befitting of the energy he exudes. The movie is about a young woman who finds out her brother is about to marry a woman she went to high school with, a popular girl who bullied her every day. Blah blah blah ensues. Kristen Belle stars along with Odette Yustman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Betty White, Victor Garber, James Wolk, and small spot by Kristin Chenoweth and cameos from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Patrick Duffy.
The actors looked like they were having fun, in the blooper reel. Unfortunately the blooper reel was ten times more entertaining than the movie. I loved watching Kristen Belle make funny faces and make funny voices in the reel, but watching her act through the full movie, not so much. Betty White is used sparingly and mainly in the same way everyone uses her: naughty old woman. Odette Yustman is one good looking woman, that is for sure, now she just needs to be featured in some better roles.
I chuckled at a gag here and there, but mainly because of the actors and their presence, not because the movie itself was funny. So, kudos to the actors somewhat, and poo poo on the rest of what made it a movie at all because it's a stinker. I zoned out a bunch because the plot was cliché and predictable along with meandering and stupid. I did not give a crap about a single one of the character or their problems.
The best parts, aside from the bloopers reel, were a quick gag with Betty White flying through the shot in a swing and then the ending with Betty White facing off against her own old nemesis. The movie would have been way better if it was about Betty White and another old woman fighting each other the whole plot through. Hear that studio? Take THAT and make some more poo to fling on to the screen, because there may be more chuckles to be had going that route.
The worst part of the movie, if anything smelled worse than any other part, the music. Sounded like stock Disney music for any over-the-top inspiring message type of movie. Disney was the distributor not the producers though, so can't exactly say they are at fault. Another thing, every few minutes in the plot there would be a new life lesson, message delivered moment with sappy dialog. Groan. We've heard it all before, just crack some jokes, and have Odette Yustman do some more sizzling dances.
"You Again" is a movie I will never watch again. If you have not seen it congratulations.
