Movie Review: Armageddon (1998) Starring Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Liv Taylor

Rebecca Rosenburg

Armageddon is a 1998 adventure movie that features a team of oil drillers who are recruited by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to save the world. While driller Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) works to keep hotshot young driller A.J. (Ben Affleck) from destroying his rig and dating his daughter Grace (Liv Taylor), New York city is peppered with giant asteroids from outer space. NASA learns there is a monster asteroid headed straight to earth and scientists advise the President that should the asteroid reach earth, Armageddon would ensue. NASA trains Harry and his team in the basics of working in space before sending them out to the asteroid to drill a hole, drop a nuclear bomb, and set it off. While NASA and Grace watch and wait, Harry's team must work together to survive an exploding space station, raining asteroids, unfriendly terrain, and space dementia to save the earth from a plausible doomsday scenario.

I have seen this movie several times since it was released, and have enjoyed it each time. It is a story of adventure, suspense, and a bit of romance. Armageddon made me laugh and at times cry, but mostly it was just a great movie to watch. I recommend popcorn and Mt. Dew as the perfect accompaniments to this awesome film.
