Jeff Gedgaud
David Cross of Arrested Development fame has a new stand up act that brings his brand of comedy on DVD to the masses from his odd career and background.

I have not seen many comedians performing stand up before reviewing DVD's and Blu-ray movies as a freelance writer and I have not seen much that appeared on cable TV as well. I have not been interested in Arrested Development so I missed out on what is probably the biggest role of David Cross's career but if his new standup routine is any indication I am not missing much.

David Cross Bigger & Blackerer is a standup routine for those that enjoy his brand of slightly political offbeat humor that is a bit controversial. He touches on all the standard shock and awe topics including a few that are a bit on the riskier side like necrophilia and organized religion.

While I did get a few laughs I mostly wondered when the show would end and why anyone would purchase more of his routines if previous ones were not all that great. I just don't find much about his routine that is all that funny but some may like his brand of humor.

David Cross reminds me of many comedians that just have that shock and awe and politically controversial humor that is the only thing they can come up with. Much of the routine does not seem heartfelt or individually meaningful so I think he misses the feel for the jokes.

He does speak personally about his drug and alcohol use for a good stretch but this seems more of a public outpouring just because than to get a laugh about the topic. There just seems to be something missing from his routine and most of his jokes that makes you wonder what he was thinking when writing this up.

Much of his main humor is missing the mark and just makes you wonder what is going on such as talking about date rape and a pamphlet that recommends women carry a drink testing kit. You can immediately see the ridiculousness of going around a party or bar testing your own drink before drinking it but he just does not deliver it well.

Other topics of his routine, especially his own drug and drinking problems he takes too lightly when it should be more of a revelation and eye opener. His routine just misses the emphasis at times and the correct ending to make thing click that is the heart and soul of a good comedian.

While David Cross may be a hit, not by his acting in Chipmunk movies to be sure, this stand up routine is really a miss with more shock value that is not all that shocking. Even if you enjoy the politically blunt comedy styling's of David Cross this DVD may not be worth a purchase, if you like his previous work a rental may be a better option.
